Ah man, while you don't like to see retirements, I thought it was for Benoit going off Google scores, that's grim. Hope she's OK. Hope she's also not injury prone as she's had a few mid match retirements now.

Now there is a medical time out at 0-40 on Katie's serve in the final set. No idea who it's for, but I'm not feeling positive.

Nope, not with her recent injury record, could be a very unfortunate day.

Play has resumed. Katie lost that first game and had break back points in the next one, then held, but is still a break down 1-2*

Also just seen that Emma has lost only 13 matches since her first pro event in April 2018, and 4 of those were via mid match retirement. Growth spurts may have generally been a factor, but that isn't a great sign, and hopefully won't hold her back from gaining momentum in the coming years.

When I saw there had been a retirement so one sided was the first set I assume automatically at first that it was Benoit that had retired... so some shock when I realised that's not the way round the tick was. Extremely sad and quite strange too, second set was still on serve.

It really is unfortunate. She was by far the GB player that I was most interested in this week, and the most exciting, hope she is OK for next week. That LTA person said she was debating playing Sunderland last year, but decided to withdraw late since she made the SF in Bolton the week before (with studies also in mind), so just on a personal level, it would be disappointing to see her miss it twice in a row.

Get well soon Emma.

Blob looked at this issue of retirements as well, but we certainly seem to have had retiredments left right and centre at the moment, as well as then withdrawals from following weeks tournaments. This was Emma's first match of the year.... and she doesn't make it through...

Katy's trying to hang on, 4-5*, but facing her 3rd MP, may already have lost whilst typing this.

She did cry

Ali finding it tough as expected, 3-6 0-4, so baring an epic comeback, looks like some singles representation will be down to Sam.

I know a lot on here will have followed her career for a long time, and it would be great if she could get somewhere towards the top 150 by the grass season and ask the question to the Wimbledon committee, but at the same time, looking longer term, her age doesn't make it as exciting, from my POV anyway, e.g. I was more encouraged when Maia won Shrewsbury, or Jodie made the Bolton final last year, than when Sam won Chiswick/Woking last year, but of course I wish her well, and hope she can at least get a win or two here.

Emma took a nasty fall and had to be carried off court, very distressed. She was wheeled out the centre about 45mins later. Was dominating and looks a good prospect. Hopefully it's not serious.

Katy had the better of her match I felt, she was definitely the one trying to force the play and make something happen. But in the tight moments and on the break points you could see and feel the lack of matches and the doubt. She just didn't back herself in the big moments which was why those chances weren't converted. A shame, she netted a forehand on the break point in the last game after dominating the rally.

I think she just needs to keep playing herself back in and try not to get too down.

Ali has all the gear but she's miles away from this level still. Bondar was playing well within herself.

Thanks for that insight Paul smile

Yes thanks Paul.   But oh dear, wheeled out the centre doesn't sound good to me. cry

I see the Norwegian Eikeri retired when 4-3 up in her doubles match, so was replaced by another LL, but again, our players missed out. So there was 1/3 chance the first time, and 2/5 this time, but no joy.

Weirdly I am relieved to hear its a fall although that still leaves the possibility of something long term hopefully a sprain and a little shock rather than anything more sinister. Having yet another young player prone to chronic injuries would raise alarm bells at this point.
