Main draw is out, I can't see Eden, but man, there's some really good looking first round draws.

Svitolina vs Muguruza

Kenin vs Rybakina

Sabalenka vs Sakkari

I know Qiang has slipped down a bit recently, but even her vs Mertens could be good as they had some really good 3 set battles at Indian Wells and Wimbledon last year.

There's obviously some higher ranked plsyers like Halep and Pliskova there, but if the above four matches were your QFs, then I don't think it would look too out of place.

I see Rybakina is an SE for her run in St Petersburg. She was meant to be top seed in that mess WTA Debrecen/Budapest event that got cancelled, so a lot of those players ended up in the Dubai qual lost, so I wonder if that might have ended up costing Eden a MDWC, or if she just didnt want to play singles anyway?

Apologies for my ignorance here but could someone explain why Eden, with her relatively low ranking, would be entitled to a MDWC over and above any other player?

Someone on here mentioned a year ago that she has links there, and is often based there, and she has had WCs for the event for the past 2 years. Saying that, I could have sworn she had a MDWC in 2018 when it was also it's year to be a Premier event and not a P5, but turns out that was 'just' a QWC, so she might never have been in MDWC contention in the first place.

I don't think that anyone here was really expecting a MDWC for Eden, but she has had QWC's before, and, as Beth played doubles with Eden here last year there is a very good chance Eden is in Dubai as well. There's a bit of a discussion in last year's tournament thread. Took a bit of finding as it is well back now !

I did think there was a chance as I was sure that 2018 Diyas match was in the main draw for some reason, but as it was a QWC then yes, it would have been highly unlikely she would get one.

She actually got to deuce on the first game, but since then only 3 further points.

0-6 *0-3.

0-6 0-6 as expected in 32 mins. All a bit pointless really.

Beth on the same court, so should be on soon.

Expected whitewash, only won 7 points in the whole match.6_0 6_0. 3 of those points won in first game, and only 2 of them on her own serve.

Beth gets a break in the first game, so at least she won't lose 6-0 6-0!!!

Good start - right up to 2-3 - but now it's 2-6 and *1-0.

Beth led 4-2, and had break points for the double break, but couldn't take them. The last few games were over quite quickly, and it finished 4-6.
Still, an impressive performance against the WR38.

I'm surprised this hasn't been commented on but this tournament marks the return of Kim Clijsters for her "third" career, having last played at the USO where our Laura ended her career the last time around.
Kim plays (6) Kiki Bertens.

I watched some of the Vera v Dabrowski match and is was cringeworthy. I look forward to finding out how she got the wildcard. She is, at best, a club player. It wasnt the couple of serves that hit her side of the net before reaching the net or the string of awful unforced errors that bothered me but rather her complete lack of interest in playing. I think it is sad that there are so many eager juniors who would have loved the opportunity to play a top 100 player at a WTA event and the wild card went to someone so disinterested.
