Yeah, it's basically been downhill for one reason or another since that Ostapenko Centre Court match at Wimbledon in 2018, bar that one week in Spain last April when she won that W60 title out of the blue beating Badosa and Stojanovic, who are both currently in the top 100, and Jodie who was in really good form at the time.
I think injury would be one of those reasons or another. She was nursing an injury at the back end of 2018 and clearly was hampered for the majority of 2019, so her week in Spain was miraculous (she also played a blinder in Surbiton and pushed Riske to 3 sets). But as much as I think Katy is great I can acknowledge the likely ranking ceiling. So admit that 100% fit shes probably not going to suddenly break into the top 150 but theres enough force if character there that id never count her out
Oh yeah, injury has played a huge part, and was the main thing I was referring to, there was also cryptic social media messages about no dancing, suggesting things weren't great off court, but then they would likely be linked.
She had a bit of momentum in 2018, did well on the W25 tour in the early part, got to a career high, got a few notable wins on the grass events, got her big moment at Wimbledon, but unfortunately, at the moment, that does look as good as it's going to get, but I wish her well, and hope that she can give us a few more surprises in the coming years, and if she doesn't get back towards (or beyond) the 200 mark, I at least hope she can stay active, and enjoy her tennis.
Well she's nearly 25 and has never broken the top 200. She has 105 of her 137 points resting on two tournaments. She could use building up some points as it is hard to see her winning another W60 right now. I tend to agree with you that maybe 2018 is as good as it will get. She's a fighter but at 25 it is going to get harder and harder to climb up the rankings to a significant level. Who knows about fitness and life off court but I admire the tenancity to try and motivate yourself to keep going as what might well turn out to be a modest career.
As Ace says, when fit and well hopefully Katy enjoys her tennis life.
And if you actually enjoy the cir1cuit and can financially manage it then, even when results are not so good, I imagine ongoing motivation is less of an issue.
Whatever their ranking many are still doing what they want to do.
The past 12 months hasn't been great for either of these players, one obviously (and unfortunately) due to injury, the other due to form. They met at WTA Acapulco R1 in late Feb 2019, when Perrin was 148 and not far off her career high of 134, she's now almost 100 places lower despite playing a full schedule of 28 events over the past 12 months. Katie was 85 at the time, 3 off her CH.
On another note, does anoyone know anything about Sam's French opponent? CD?
I've never heard of her, and looking at her ranking, age (32 this month), and CH, you'd say it was a gift draw for Sam, but the opponent was surprisingly (to me) the pre match favourite, and is *2-3 up, with in play odds of 1/4. This is her record:
So sorry, Ace. I've seen her name once or twice but know absolutely nothing about her.....Will try and look her up....
No worries, I'm intrigued. Had she have had a CH of say 137 7 or 8 years ago then packed in, you might have understood it, but I've never heard her name mentioned, never saw it on Tennisforum, absolutely nothing, yet here she is in the twilight of her career, playing her best stuff (a bit like Sam I guess), but I was surprised to see her a pre match 1/2 fave against a solid 200 player, but so far (2-6 *0-1), those odds were more than justified.
