Week 6 - ATP 250 - New York Open, NY, USA (hard)

Kyle making the most of his draw playing circa 100 ranked players so far as opposed to Cam who hasnt taken this chance.

The sky is blue, the grass is green and a Kyle draw.

Lost the 2nd 8-6 in a TB.

Into the dreaded MTB.

With them having a nice 4-1 lead in the second set TB I went off to see who they would potentially play in the SF. That would be Johnson & Opelka.

Err, one set all, 6-4 6-7(6)

MTB ...

QF:  Marcelo Arévalo (ESA) & Jonny O'Mara CR 120 (63+57) defeated Robert Lindstedt & Tennys Sandgren (SWE/USA) CR 282 (74+208) by 6-4 6-7(6) [10-6]

*****

SF:  Steve Johnson & Reilly Opelka (USA/USA)  CR 472 (291+181) vs Marcelo Arévalo (ESA) & Jonny O'Mara CR 120 (63+57)

On paper, it looks like a stroll in the park, but the Yanks beat Sharan & Sitak in straight sets (3 & 4) in their quarter-final match who had beaten the top seeds, Krajicek & Skugor, in straight sets (7-6(3) 6-3) in the first round...

MTB ? No problem.

Jonny and Marcelo take it 10-6 and advance to the SF.

I was thinking that that SF looks so not a stroll in the park. I wouldn't take that much notice of the Americans' doubles rankings. It'll be a good win if they get it.

I did say "on paper", Indy, the implication being that little or no notice should be taken of the Yanks' respective doubles rankings.  wink

That will be very tough. Opelkas serve is huge and Johnson is a superb doubles player,

I still think theyll win though.

Kyle is now second favourite to win New York according to Tennis Abstract and , in essence, Opelka and he are a toss up.

Player QF SF F W
(1)John Isner (USA) 63.4% 39.7% 23.9% 13.0%
Jordan Thompson (AUS) 36.6% 18.0% 8.5% 3.5%

(2)Milos Raonic (CAN) 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 0.0%

Humbert close in there too for being the eventual winner. Humbert judged to have a  slightly tougher QF than Kyle but it looks like a Humbert vs Edmund SF would be judged close to 50/50.

Isner's title % will also be right up there, possibly even go top, if he wins the final L16 match vs Thompson. Certainly there would then be four fairly close.

Well Isner went out and it still shows Opelka, Kyle and Humbert as the 3 most likely winners. Good opportunity for all of them.
