Jodie has a tough match first up. Yuan is the person who beat Sam in the first round of qualifying in the AO in 3 sets. She lost in the second q round to Nao Hibino also in 3 sets but Hibino did win the last two sets 6-1 6-1. Nevertheless I'm not sure Jodie's level is back at this level yet. though the match will certainly give her a good challenge and a chance to see how much her game is coming along again.
It's a strong field too for a W25 that Yuan is not seeded. 8th seed is Bibiane Schoofs (NED) last week at WR 186 (now 194).
R32: Jodie Anna BURRAGE (GBR) 280 vs Yue YUAN (CHN) 206=CH
Well done Jodie, that's probably her best win since her return.
Strong field as Michael says, and will likely face Wang Xinyu next, and if she does win that, it'll possibly be the other promising teenager Wang Xiyu after that, so an extended run will be tough, but it's great to see her get a battling win against a higher ranked opponent, and something to build on in the coming weeks.
And Jodie will not get Wang as she retired early on in her match today, even though she was leading at the time. A good opportunity then for Jodie to progress to the QF. Whilst Buayam was out injured between Sept 18 and May 19, it is 8 months since she has been back and her record in that time has been poor.
R16: Jodie Anna BURRAGE (GBR) 280 vs Kamonwan BUAYAM (THA) [WC] 1256 (CH:343 May 16)
Just to note further that even if Jodie reaches the QF she will still not experience a ranking gain the week after next (17 Feb). At the moment she will experience points drops in two successive weeks. Next week she loses 30 pts for reaching the Jodhpur W25 final last year, and this drop will take her back outside the top 300. The following week (17 Feb), she has 13 pts coming off for reaching the Shrewsbury W60 QF last year, and so will need to reach the SF here to be in plus territory for that week, and will need to win the tournament to be in plus territory for the two weeks put together. Given the strength of the field here that would take some doing...

Wow, the odds in that match were Xinyu 1/33, Thai player 9/1, but I guess it just shows it's not a foregone conclusion until the match point is won, or in this case, they shake hands. Ive not seen or even heard of the opponent, but you'd think it should be a decent chance for Jodie to reach the QF.
And now the other seeded 18 year old X Wang has also crashed out. Xiyu losing 7-5 in the decider to a very experienced Japanese player, but still a match where she was the clear favourite (1/11). I'll shut up...
But on a serious note, Jodie has gone from potentially having to play 2 top 150 18 year old former top juniors, to no seeds until the semi finals. Hope she can take advantage.
She was a really big favourite here, so quite fortunate that the seed retired early in the previous round, but still very good to see her come through routinely, which may not have happened a couple of months ago.
Interesting match next. She plays a 24 year old who has floated around the 300-500 range for about 5 years, but is now at a career high of 274 and seems to be playing her best stuff. She won a W60 the other month beating the 188, 170, 126 and 115 (Begu), so must have something about her. That title was on clay, where she seems to have played about 80% of her matches over the last 3 or 4 years.

While good to hold onto a ranking in the short term, and can help a bit re entries and seedings/draws, the bigger thing for me is that Jodie's results suggest a real pick up in form. Get back to consistently better form, stay fit, and her ranking will take care of itself in time, especially in the second half of the year.
Though yes, encouraged as I am, all the better if she has a really big week.
PS: FWIW Jodie is onto the qualifying list for the WTA International Hua Hin, Thailand next week. Any points earned there will also count for 17th Feb.

Yes I agree Indy, the uptick in her form is the most encouraging factor for sure... and still begs the question of whether the W15 events were worth it, but maybe they allowed her to shake off some rust.
Jodie is on court now. After trading early breaks she got the crucial extra break in the 7th game of the first set and then held her next two service games to win the set 6-4.
