The Winter Cup season started this weekend with qualifying for the under 12s.
The girls team of Hannah Klugman, Amalia Widdowson and Sophie Bekker came through a competitive match with the host nation France recording a 3-0 win, and backed that up with a comfortable 3-0 result against Hungary (2 & 0 wins for Amalia and Hannah in singles) to ensure qualification for their final in Sunderland in 2 weeks time
The boys team of Cassius David Haye, Thomas Lefranc and Jesse Clarkson started strongly against Finland (bakery products all round) but had the misfortune to be drawn against Russia in today's decider. Russian boys teams have been amongst the strongest in recent years, and they beat GBR 3-0 (Thomas took his match to 3 sets, but the other two matches had one sided scores). Hence we will not be at the under 12 boys finals
Despite a comfortable 1 & 1 win for Hannah in the number 1 singles the U12 girls lost 2-1 to Poland (a MTB loss in the doubles) so will be unseeded in the finals. The boys lost 2-1 to Belarus, just winning the doubles, so finish fourth in their group
interesting list of uk boys - not the highest rated in uk - all below top 30 for 2007, and CH is below 100? I guess this is more a case of the privilege of sending your boys to Reeds tennis school
Qualifying for the under 14s and under 16s start tomorrow. The under 14 girls have a strong squad in France (Hannah Read, Mingge Xu and Hephzibah Oluwadare) and are seeded 2 behind France. They meet Spain tomorrow The under 16 girls are up against it in Belarus. The team of Matilda Mutavdzic, Eva Shaw and Ranah Akua Stoiber is seeded 3, but to reach the finals they will need to overcome Lithuania and (probably) the perennially strong top seeds Russia who have taken the under 16 title in 4 of the last 5 years.
The under 14 boys (Viktor Frydrych, Ben Gusic Wan and Luke Hooper ) are seeded 2 but have to get past their host nation Italy on day. The under 16 boys (Luca Pow, Matthew Rankin and Samuel Reeve) are unseeded and meet third qualifying seeds Belgium on day 1
Hannah completes the job with a 6-1 6-4 win over Sarah Iliev to ensure seeding. Good work, as both opponents are ranked just inside the TE14 top 10
The under 16s were very unlucky, as if they had been drawn in any other group they would have ended up being top seeded, with only one of the other 3 groups looking potentially tricky. They made short work of Serbia to finish third in their group (wins in straights for Eva, Matilda and Matilda/Ranah)
The under 12 girls finals start tomorrow. As GBR are unseeded a tough draw was expected, and it looks that way - playing the Czech Republic tomorrow, who have reached the final in 3 of the last 4 years.
Hannah appears to be a special talent, but even she will be up against it tomorrow against the Czech #1. Hopefully the home crowd can spur them on to the upset.
