RE: Weeks 3/4 - Australian Open, Melbourne (hard)

Zverev won in 4 sets to at least stop one of the oldies making it through.

Nadal and Thiem are 5-5 in 4th set and closing in on 4 hours for 4 sets. If Nadal can win this set, we could be heading to a 5 hour match and a 1 am finish, and the other mixed QF is still apparently scheduled to take place after that !! Although I suspect that might get postponed if this goes to a 5th set?

Nadal goes out to Thiem, so we have Fed vs Djoko and Thiem vs Zverev
Sounds like a Djoko vs Thiem final to me.

Good stuff. The oldies SF line-up would have been so depressing.

I've seen a lot of people say this, more so this slam, than any other prior. I don't feel the same. I think it just adds to their legendary status, still dominating at their ripe old ages. Would have loved Stanimal to get to the semis too.

Well, it would have depressed me

Loved it a few years back, the continual top level competition between some of the greatest players ever to play the game, indeed legends.

But now I find myself having relatively much less interest come the latter stages. Great by them but on the whole past their best ( Fed most certainly is ) with the following generations unable to step up at Slams and give us new true stars.

Though no doubt if we were talking Nadal, Djokovic, Federer and Murray over the last few years I would at least have been much more interested in it all, if still bemoaning the younger players' failings.

I take Djokovic to win the title, but would prefer a top half winner. Can Thiem deliver? Zverev seems very unlikely but somehow he is in the SF here, having been hiding his considerable talent for quite a while before.

Apparently Thiem sacked Muster earlier in tournie, sounds like personality clash. Massu seems to be doing just fine without him.
