Week 2 - Australian Open - men's qualifying (hard)

QR1:  Liam Broady WR 234 (CH = 154 in April 2018) vs Ilya Ivashka WR 136 (CH = 80 last February)

Kudla (q7) or Tomic in the next round, should Liam perchance win that one.

QR1:  Blaz Kavcic 341 (CH = 68 in August 2012 - he's now 32) vs Jay Clarke WR 154 (CH = 153 last July)

An outside chance for Jay?  Gojowczyk (q16) or the Brazilian, Seyboth Wild, in the next round, should he win.

Tough on Jay, given that he drew Kavcic last week too, in a Challenger, and was beaten 4&2

It's a shame the LTA couldn't have come to some type of swap deal to allow Jack Draper a WC into qualies.

Both look like tough draws, and both opponents have been Top 100 in their time.

I'm not sure it would benefit Jack to be in slams yet as he has had problems with growth spurts, a possible 5 sets now wouldn't help. He has plenty of time to develop.

I'm not sure I agree there, he would have to win two three set matches to reach a 5 set match and even then I'm sure he trains about 5 hours a day at least, so wouldn't think the odd 5 set match would have any negative impact.

Well, I guess he hasnt got a spot here, French Open we will see if he raises his ranking to reach qualies, but most like his first 5 set slam main draw appearance will be on the grass of Wimbledon, pretty certainly one would expect him to get a wild card for the main draw unless he falls away and has a bad start to 2020, which looks unlikely.

Be interesting to see if he gets a wild card for Bangkok next week as he is way off main draw currently and its a long way to go for 1 week?

By all accounts, Jay was an early break up in the decider but then started cramping up badly.

From Simon Briggs on Twitter

British No 5 Jay Clarke now cramping on Court 13. Rolling in his serve at 50mph.

Hmm not good. Especially as his opponent was about 10 years older.

At least Bernard Tomic losing in QR1 made me happy though.....

Pleased that Luke Saville (WC) won too. I like watching Luke play.

And Blake Mott winning is nice - a local Aussie WC, ranked 512, who beat a seed - always good

VERY disappointing from the two Brits, both of them probably need to have a long hard think with their coaches if they are going to move up to the right level.
