Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a lawsuit in District Court in Boston Wednesday morning against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
International students currently in the USA whose unis move to all online will need to leave the US or face deportation This is being challenged by Harvard who have announced they will be 100% online all year.
The policy speaks for itself," White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said Wednesday. "You dont get a visa for taking online classes from, lets say, the University of Phoenix. So why would you if you were just taking online classes generally?" She said "Perhaps the better lawsuit would be coming from students who have to pay full tuition with no access to in person classes to attend".
A trio of other major universities Arizona State, Michigan and the University of Southern California have expressed confidence that their plans for the fall won't affect foreign students. Uni's are being encouraged to run 1 compulsory F2F course per semester for Internationals, known on Twitter as "F*** ICE 101"
Ivy League have just cancelled all Fall sports, making it the first D1 conference to suspe football. This dec could influence how other athletic directors handle Fall....
I have been watching some of the Brit Tour and UK Pro series matches - interesting to see so many of our college or former college players in the tournaments. If I have time, I will make a table of their results.
A study of the UK, USA and German tennis systems from 2004 ( might be a little dated) but provides some interesting comparisons between player development in the three countries. Attributes our lack of tennis success to many factors including class system, lack of indoor courts, poor weather and fewest competitions for players.
The study highlights the positive effect of US university tennis scholarships, standard of play and competitive opportunity; which many of our talented players have/are benefiting from. Currently there just aren't the same opportunities at British Uni's. IMO the LTA needs to come up with some decent strategies for player development here in the UK, which should include University scholarships etc!
The American Embassy has now cancelled visa appointments for many of the UK potential freshman who were hoping to head stateside in August (which was also of course still dependent on numerous other C19 related issues including the infection rate, flights, opening of unis etc).
It's official, the US has opened for UK students who are at uni there . Not seen anything about visa appointments though.....
Very interesting to see a number of our former/current/recently graduated college players in the all Brit tennis competitions. I have tabulated a few of the recent matches. Apologies if I have missed anyone, not intentional; I struggled to find links to the results for the UK Pro series and IMO the new format LTA tournament software's not great either . Actually found the UTR website to be the most user friendly
On the womens side over the last few weeks there have been US college graduates playing alongside the remainers: Alicia Barnett (Northwestern), and Emma Wilson and Abigail Amos (Arizona), with some pretty competitive matches.
Emily Arbuthnott (Stanford) has put on a good show for the college seniors and Nell Miller is due to start her senior year at Texas Tech.
Those that have been in the US for a partial freshman year are Vic Allen, Sasha Hill and Erin Richardson.
Players that have been playing recently and are looking to become freshman (and American Visa appointments are happening again now) include Esther Adeshina, Rhona Cook, Indianna Spink, Amelia Rajecki and Holly Staff.
The US rules on International students seem to change with the wind
Even if they manage to obtain a visa, new International stude whose courses are 100% online are barred from entering the US for Fall term......but DW I am sure it will only take a few days for the law to be challenged by Harvard or another college totally online with a large intake of Internationals

Tricky one. Kid keen and college happy to facilitate return of students in August but flights likely an issue - indirect is an option.
Watching brief on the US C-19 at the moment with no imminent decision making likely.

Thank you for reply TP. Heard many are returning to the US, some stayed out there and a few will be staying here, mostly because their team mates are also internationals and are not returning for Fall Semester - so they would not have any one to practice with.
Because the government have decided to classify students returning to study abroad as 'Non Essential Travel' many are having to go without travel insurance......Professional athletes and their entourage are however classified as 'Essential Travel'
In case anyone is interested, Parsa Bombs (Tennis Insider) posted a list of the top-100 male & top-75 female incoming freshmen in college tennis from the 2020 recruiting class ranked by UTR on his twitter page. See link below
I am not sure how accurate it is, however Arthur Fery is top ranked in the males with a UTR of 13.94 . Johannus Monday is ranked 23 and Toby Samuel ranked 31
The last series of Last Chance U which focuses on Laney community college Oakland is worth a watch for anyone interested in American College Sports. Laney were the 2018 National Community College Champions.
The Series follows the 2019 season and attempts to repeat the feet and shows the lengths the young men go to (1) to attend college and (2) their athleticism, it puts a little perspective on how good an athlete you have to be to get a 4 year scholarship in the American College Sports that fund the rest ie. Football and Basketball (the next series follows basketball)
The fear for several years has been that tennis programs among other sports will be cut as budgets got tighter. This current situation could be devastating.
