Stanford bringing in 4 strong freshman, it will be a real battle to get a top 2 singles slot. Geller no 1. Toby joining Connor at South Carolina & Johannus also @ a SEC school it will be very interesting to see which of the three gets to play at the highest level next season. Great to see so many Brits in the top recruiting classes on the mens side, it will be interesting to follow them.
Appalachian state announced this week they are cutting men's tennis. Brit, Milo Bargaron a current senior will be graduating, so will be not impacted directly.
The tennis programmes at App State have rented court space at a local club for years for practice and matches as the weather means outdoor courts can't be use Oct- March. There were plans to build new indoor and outdoor courts, plus athletics facilities on land purchased 20 years ago at a cost of $15.5 million. The uni announced a $45 million dollar expansion of their football stadium, plus $2.5 million to replace artificial turf funded by donations. The tennis facility costs will remain as the women's tennis programme is staying!!! For many, cutting men's tennis makes no sense.......
Edit: Announced today Wright State cutting men and women's tennis(and softball), no Brits on the rosters. Blaming Covid for accelerating the decision process to save $2 million from the althletics dept.
Lots of tweets on Bobby Knights College10s2day around the subject of the minimum number of sports a Uni is required to offer to qualify for D1 status, waivers on this number, the number of tennis programmes closing ( and balming C-19), & the potential knock on effects if Conferences fall below the minimum requirement of 6 teams....
Wright State mismanagement puts in jeopardy an NCAA berth for the 5 remaining men's teams in the Horizon League.
5 men's MM conferences are at already at 6 minimum teams-Summit, MAC, Ohio Valley, Southland and WAC. If Wright States's waiver is approved, other teams in small MM conferences might cut teams, putting more conferences at risk of losing NCAA berths which will hurt recruiting.
There are teams within these 6 conferences with ITA top 100 ranked singles or dubs players in recent years and regionally ranked teams. Each of the 12 ITA regions has 20+ teams. For 2018/19, Drake (Summit) was #8 in Central, (although Drake seems to be having a tough time recruiting and holding on to players since the halcyon days when they had a strong British pipeline), Western Michigan (MAC) was #7 and Cleveland State (Horizon) #8 in ranking for Mid-west, Denver (Summit) was #5 for Mountain Region, Buffalo (MAC) was #8 for NE, and Southland teams Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-CC were#7 and #9 in the Texas region.
The women's conferences with the fewest tennis playing members are The Summit (6), Missouri Valley (7), and Metro Athletic (7).

The American Embassy has now cancelled visa appointments for many of the UK potential freshman who were hoping to head stateside in August (which was also of course still dependent on numerous other C19 related issues including the infection rate, flights, opening of unis etc).
Bobby Knight of College Tennis Today has compiled a list of Seniors taking advantage of the extra year and also transfers. Bradley Buckland (rising Sophomore) transfering from Middle Tennessee to Montana State.

Numerous articles emerging focusing on the extent of cuts to men's and women's tennis..........sad situation :(
" Many of these schools have been suffering from bloated athletic budgets for years and are now using a virus as their excuse for decimating our sport. Its heartbreaking for the coaches and student-athletes affected. Its heartbreaking for the communities that benefit from having tennis on their local college campuses. And its heartbreaking to anyone who is a fan of college tennis." parentingaces.com/savecollegetennis
A very emotive topic; many Americans believe their tax $ go towards scholarships for Internationals. I'm not sure how they would address the private schools spending their scholarship dollars as they please? How would the State colleges then compete?? Many college coaches complain Americans would rather sit on a bench at a P5 school than play for a Mid Major and that Americans don't need Athletic scholarship because of the many other scholarships they can obtain Following article has a very narrow view......... blaming the cuts on International players, see comments on FB College Tennis Recruitment Video for more balanced views. merionwest.com/2020/05/12/the-outsourcing-of-american-tennis/
On a more positive note, we are really enjoying watching the ex-college players in the Battle of the Brits tournament

With the current Corona virus situation in the USA and the travel ban from the UK (and Europe) wondering how parents and players are feeling about Fall 2020?
Currently D1 has not cancelled athletics and my sons coach is keen for him to return to college if the US lifts the travel ban. Lectures currently planned to be a mixture of F2F and online (this may change depending on how the C-19 situation develops). He would like to return to college if he can...........I know some of the older players are considering trave to the US via a country not on its banned list so they can attend in person this Fall.
Interested in garnering as many different parent and player opinions as possible; so if you are a 'watcher' (I watched for a few years ) and have not posted before please join in.
Harvard just announced lectures will be online all year. New release states International students whose course is online will need to leave the US

Tricky one. Kid keen and college happy to facilitate return of students in August but flights likely an issue - indirect is an option.
Watching brief on the US C-19 at the moment with no imminent decision making likely.
