Dawn Of The Dead: For Hundreds Of The Nations Private Colleges, Its Merge Or Perish

With the impact of C-19 yet to be fully realised, some small private colleges are at risk of not meeting their enrolment numbers.  Colleges with a C- or D will allegedly be making big cuts or having to do a lot of fund raising. College tennis faces significant challenges to validate it's worth , it might be worth taking a look at the article in Forbes.

Forbes analyzed the finances of 933 private not-for-profit colleges with enrollments greater than 500. The wealthiest, elite schools are getting richer, and most of the rest, poorer.

Interview by Anne-Marie Batson with Holly Hutchinson about her time at Old Dominion, and her hopes for the coming year at grad school, before (hopefully) turning professional. It's 22 minutes long - if you can stick with it it's worth a watch.

Yes, well done to all of them.  Be interesting to see Emily Arbuthnott's plans.  I guess with tennis as it is (or is not) at the moment, she may decide to sign up for a masters.  She's certainly a very bright young lady.

I'll be very surprised if Emily doesn't stay on and do a masters. Economics at Stanford must be pretty tough ! Whatever she decides, she'll do well.

East Carolina State Uni is to cut 4 sports including mens and women's tennis as the athletics department has a $10.2 million dollar deficit. Brit Daniel Bird is a Freshman there. Best wishes to Daniel for the future.

Furman (~ 2500 students) is cutting baseball and men's lacrosse and is allegedly cutting 45 more scholarships as cross different sports in the next few years. I think most of the Brits ( Jake Munns, Senior and Georgie Walker, Junior) are close to finishing their time at Furman

Stanford dont bend the academic criteria for athletes, they get well looked after and there are so many of them it is just the norm, if you get in you are equipped to make the most of it and Emily was in the all academic PAC 12 1st team so probably just finds it interesting as opposed to tough, there are a large number of well educated kids of alums which I think normalises the Undergraduate IQ a bit when they have to learn independently. It is not unusual for athletes who by definition have multi-tasked to standout academically too, the antithesis of the jock stereotype, some of the footballers are truly amazing when you consider their background which particularly wideout is typical of college footballers nationwide.

Richard Sherman the trash talking NFL superstar corner back is straight out of Compton after college games he was always out infront of the band swinging his dreds (no leaving early did a full 5 years of academic study including a red shirt year). Watch him being interviewed & he comes across as a total idiot however he literally has a masters in communication! plus his own charity (Blanket coverage) aimed at supporting children on low incomes to achieve academic success supporting them with clothes and books.

Another one bites the dust......

Alabama Huntsville, has just announced its cutting men's and women's tennis (D2) and hockey (D1) due to C-19. 5 FT staff members are cut and 45 athletes must transfer including Brits James Caddies (junior) and Freshman, Aaron Osmond. Fortunately AHU will honour their scholarships for the remainder of their academic careers should they choose to remain...... Best wishes to James and Aaron for the future.

Post on College Tennis RecruitKent from a former UAH student - obviously one persons view of the situation at UAH:

My name is Dylan Hall. I played for The University of Alabama in Huntsville for two years. After hearing of the news that both Mens and Womens programs were terminated I simply had to let my perspective be heard. This is by no means about me, I feel terrible for the student-athletes who were on the current roster. I do not have nearly enough answers right now. This is also by no means an attempt to be spiteful or vindictive towards anyone or UAH as an organization as a whole. I am forever grateful for the opportunity the University gave me. It is easy to get caught up with what we read online with numbers without digging deep and fully understanding what goes on in a team to get to know the individuals that are behind any program. Endless amounts of energy was poured OFF the court into trying to guide this program towards achieving its maximum potential. Huntsville is an absolutely amazing and unique city to play college tennis in and we were able to create some truly special moments there against many odds. To now see it all come undone is truly disheartening...The vision I had was unfortunately marred by inconceivably poor leadership, poor organization and a deep lack of consistency and desire across the Universitys Athletic Department to inspire change for the better. This decision is another example of that.

To my teammates: I acknowledge I was not perfect. I wish we could have put more of our differences aside and come together to instill these changes. Perhaps it still wouldnt have been enough against a broken system. I want to specially thank my doubles partner Sebastian Rohrbach, James Caddies, Marilene Van Beek and Rodrigo Palominos for always supporting me when things got tough.

Every student-athlete deserves a fair chance to complete their eligibility and I hope all of you on the current roster find a new school that you enjoy and compete for with pride.

For any college athlete or anyone reading this, you can overcome any tumultuous circumstances and be the best version of you!

I am happy to help any of you in any way I can!

Sincerely,   Dylan Hall

Sadly, more schools will be forced to eliminate some of their programs in the next few months. NCAA suggests some colleges using C-19'as an excuse to eliminate athletics. Whilst some student athletes will be able to find other opportunities to continue their dream, others will not be so lucky.

https://eu.mycentraljersey.com/story/sports/college/2020/05/19/colleges-using-pandemic-excuse-cut-sports-programs/5225835002/

The number of transfers is particularly high this year due to the C-19 additional year of eligibility. Many graduating college tennis players are choosing to study for a masters either at their current uni or are transferring. Places on rosters are filling up and allegedly a few incoming Freshman have been told they no longer have a spot...........

College tennis, ITA andC-19 with Tim Russell -

The first from College tennis today -If fall tennis happens, what do you think it will look like?

TR talks about reducing travel, realigning conferences for non revenue sports and from 2023 holding team championships for D1,2 and 3 at the same time in Orlando and moving singles and doubles championships to the fall. Implies losing the All American tournament in the Fall.....

The second from parenting aces (I skimmed through this as it was ~48 mins long)
