Forgive me, so ITA is the national indoor team event for us colleges? And Baylor are in the final and Charles Broom is winning for them and in their roster at 5 singles?

is he the only Brit at this stage ? Seems like hes done well!?

Yes, yes, yes and yes smile  Brit Finn Bass is also on the Baylor roster, but not selected for the team. Baylor have a new coach since the surprise resignation of Coach Boland last summer, due to alleged inappropriate behaviour. Seems the new Coach is working out well!

Tennessee are in the consolation - Giles Hussey and Johannus Munday

Cool, thanks. Perhaps Indy will get Broom on his winners list if they win. And dont forget player of the month nominations!

Looks like Connor Thomson was the hero yesterday - clinched the win for the team by getting his match, 6-3 in the third

THere's a little Youtube 5-minuter that Connor put up recently too, about his uni and their tennis programme (more just a little tour of the place, really, and the facilities)

This week the Oracle ITA Team Rankings expanded to include the top 50 teams in the nation. For the third straight week, 2021 Indoors champions North Carolina top the list. Similarly, the rest of the top seven teams also remained unchanged. However, the middle portion of the rankings saw a lot of change. Teams ranked from No. 8 to No. 16 mainly shuffled around one or two spaces over the past week. The largest increase came from No. 22 Memphis. The Tigers rose three spots over the past week. Memphis was also recently named the UTR ITA Team of the Month for February.  Current Brits include David Stevens, Oscar  Cutting and James Storey.

Lui Maxted (one of our brightest young hopes, with fans on this site) has signed up with TCU for the 2021/22 roster, which is where Ali Gray and Jake Fearnley are.

Interesting how this pair both originally from Herts have ended up at Baylor. Quite different pathways........ Charlie is very bright and excels academically, has always been full time in a mainstream school and trained part time at Gosling. He then attended Dartmouth College prior to joining  Baylor as a Graduate transfer (the Ivies didnt offer a 5th year).

Finn trained full time at Gosling  (one of the LTA,s Future Stars ) before moving to Somerset where he attended Millfield for ~5 years then moved to the JTC training centre in London and was home schooled. Dad Gary Bass  worked at LLoyds and is now allegedly dabbling in a new venture, Ginger Sports Productions, so money no object. Finn  ground it out on the Futures for a year without massive success, so took the plan B option of College in the US. Now giving his home location as Rock, Finn has always remained as Hertfordshire on the LTA site,  although he has only chosen to  compete for the county on a handful of occasions.

Cracked rackets college contender series focuses on Baylor Bears. Baylor Mens Tennis Head Coach Michael Woodson discusses the new additions to the Baylor roster, team lineups, the decision to head to Ann Arbor for the ITA kickoff weekend and  much more.

Edited to add cracked rackets link

Really good to see so many girls at top programmes in the SEC.

Currently excited by Connor and Tobys progress at University of South Carolina in the SEC where there is depth in the top programmes.

Playing right at the top of the order in the SEC gives you regular ITF level/challenger professional standard competition. A 4-3 loss to the Tar Heels when you are so dependent on Freshman and then Connor only lost in the third against the no 41 ranked player nationally.

He will really have to fight for that No 1 spot Rodrigues a Portuguese sophmore beat the nations no 6 in the number 1 slot.
Connor appears to have forced himself into the number 2 slot through weight of performance at 3 and Toby similarly competing hard for the 3 position. Getting up the order yet having that depth of quality in practice will be great for them both.

Interesting isnt it. The very positive tennis microclimate that exists in Southern California of which UCLA, USC and Pepperdine (for women) are a major part. The density of good players means local prospects dont (consider) necessarily having to step out of state let alone internationally for competition with the colleges recruiting a significant proportion of their players in state also. Chuck in the NorCal schools and local ITFs/challengers (the autumn west coast challenger swing) and its an almost perfect environment for college subsidised progression into the pro-game.

Only Pepperdine doesnt have massive Football and Basketball programmes raking in the cash, College football is so massive in LA there was until relatively recently no NFL sides and the locals werent that bothered.

Transfers 2021

Not someone Ive heard of, but Sophomore Matthis Ross (UTR 12.79) of Virginia Tech will transfer and has verbally committed to @AggieMTEN for the fall of 2021. The Brit has played primarily at the #2 singles/#3 doubles spots this season & has amassed an overall singles record of 14-13. ITA singles rank of #96.

other  news:
Oliver Okonkwo beats ranked opponent as Hawkeyes fall to Ohio State. Oliver will transfer to Drake when Iowa shuts mens tennis at the end of the semester.

Oliver Okonkwo (UI) def. #112 Kyle Seelig (OSU): 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7)

https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2021/03/28/no-16-ohio-state-beats-hawkeyes/

Not sure if the O is still active? Would anyone else like to start a 2021/22 college tennis thread? Cya (and others) have added a long list of those going in 2021....
