Out of interest, has anyone been watching the action? I wondered how it compared with the Davis Cup in terms of the crowd size, atmosphere and the degree to which the players seem passionate about it, relative to the DC?
Bah, what a waste of effort from the GB team in making each of their wins vs Moldova so conclusive and waste of my time in calculating just how strong a position they had got themselves into to be one of the best RUs, when the ruddy Belgians go and win 2-1 so all we needed to do was beat Moldova 3-0 by any means
Can we buy back some of these unneccessary extra good games to use in the QF?
But just think of the fun ahead working out the final options for the RU spots with nothing riding on it but the pleasure of the task itself!
Sadly for them, Japan fell away with a loss 3-0 to Spain.
Belgium and Canada still hold the RU spots, with the ties between France and South Africa, Croatia and Argentina determining if any of those 4 countries are able to take one of those spots. Croatia v Arg will also determine top spot in their group.
I see Nadal played doubles today, presumably gearing up for the knockout stages to ensure he had some practice in.
QF: (2) Cameron Norrie WR 52 vs (WC) (2) Nick Kyrgios (AUS) WR 29 (CH = 13 in October 2016)
QF: (1) Daniel Evans WR 42 vs (WC) (1) Alex de Miņaur (AUS) WR 18 (= CH)
QF: Jamie Murray & Joe Salisbury CR 45 (23+22) vs (WC) Chris Guccione & John Peers (AUS/AUS) UNR (0+25)
As I mentioned yesterday, the Gooch & Peers won all three of their round robin matches, being taken to only one tie-break & one MTB in the process... I'm not feeling at all optimistic about the encounter.
All of the first 5 countries as group winners also qualified for last 8 of DC - Serbia, Russia, Australia, GB and Spain.
Of the other 5 still in the running (Belgium, Canada, France, Argentina and Croatia) as I write, Canada and Argentina also both qualified for the DC last 8.
Germany is the only one of the DC last 8 not still "alive" in the competition currently

Argentina win their group after beating Croatia (H2H record) and make it the 6th DC QF team into last 8. South Africa and France tie singles and so both are out.
Belgium 6-3 matches, 12-10 sets - they are definitely now through.
The other place is between Croatia and Canada now:
Croatia 5-3 matches 10-8 sets. A win v Argentina would take them through, a loss put them out
Canada still 5-4 and 12-8 on sets but now dependent on losses in doubles for Croatia.
Croatia have Dodig and Mektic playing Gonzalez and Molteni, should be close but maybe one would put Dodig and Mektic as slight favourites. It is nearly midnight in Sydney and this match has just started, I believe Argentina will go again in their QF tie tomorrow night, also in Sydney.

2 wins - 31 players had 2 wins including the 4 Brits that have played (Dan, Cam, Jamie and Joe)
For what it is worth, the players with 3 wins or more in the Davis Cup are listed below: you will see from the above that all of the players on 4 wins in the ATP Cup (bar Medvedev who didnt play in the Davis Cup) where also among the top performers in the Davis Cup as well, from the list below. Maybe these 4 players ( Djokovic, Khachanov, Nadal, Shapovalov) are worth having money on in the Aussie Open?!
(DAVIS CUP - Player Wins
Nadal 8 (going well again in Oz)
Rublev 6 (not playing in Oz)
Pospisil 5 (not playing in Oz)
Shapovalov 5 (going well again in Oz)
De Minaur 3 (2 wins so far in Oz)
Djokovic 3 (going well again in Oz)
Edmund 3 (not playing in Oz)
Granollers 3 (not playing in Oz)
Khachanov 3 (going well again in Oz))
My guess would be Serbia, Russia, Australia and Spain in the semis!
None of the last 8 played each other in the Davis Cup, so no recent H2H to look at, but your last 4 list looks like the most likely combo to me. I hope GB can prove it wrong though versus the Aussies
Hope the Belgians and ( on much dodgier ground ) the Canadians enjoyed their day as each of the days' 3 groups failed to produce better RUs.
So Belgium drop into our half. But I'm doubting that there will be a GB vs Belgium repeat.
For GB I do think the Aussies are a better option than what the two RUs have in their QFs.
Agreed, Australia or Spain or Serbia - to be fair, Serbia might be beatable at a stretch. But, Aussies best option. Assuming that we can manage to win the doubles, we have to win a singles. Cam v Kyrgios, depends if Nick K turns up but he will be strong favourite. Cam did beat him via a retirement in 2018 though!
Can Dan beat De Minaur - it is do able, Dan won last time they played in Canada Masters last summer.
So, Australia favourites but GB have a decent chance.
