British Tour - 2020

Great to get three top-600 WTA players in the event.

Well done to young Hannah Smith (born 2004) for qualifying.

Kristina Paskauskas, also born 2004, is in the MD.

And major congrats to even younger Tabitha Holmes (born 2005) who also qualified.

And Jessica Matthews, age 15, too.

Always nice to see a lot of young juniors taking part in big events.

No major upsets, although Morgan Cross beat (8) Nadia Rawson.

Kristina P (2004) got a win. AS did young Tabitha (2005), playing another qualifier.

In the Premier event at Bath, the top seeds took care of business very comfortably (Sam, Lissey and Freya won six sets for the loss of 8 games)

The last 8 are:

(1) Sam v (7) Millie Bissett
(3) Freya v Morgan Cross
(4) Andre Lukosiute v (6) Holly Staff
(2) Lissey v (5) Grace Piper

Well it's Premier Tier, so £1,500 to the winner and £850 to the runner up. The winner gets a MDWC for Glasgow or Sunderland, and the runner-up a QWC.

But I believe it is also first tournament for Freya, and first since AO for Sam, so match practice for both of them (well, starting with the QF, assuming they get there - the earlier matches are really just a warm-up for them)

Bath is Sam's tennis centre and base (or was).

I think it's great that she's supporting it.

And, as the addict says, it's good money and good match practice, just before the important UK events, and - because quite a lot of them are doing it - the level is actually interesting.

It's also no harm in playing down sometimes - good chance to try out different things in match situations.

Lissey is also playing - and she shares a coach with Sam, so no surprise she is playing as well.

 Good point.

It's also very difficult for many coaches to see their players actually play in match situations.

The players who aren't on the LTA funded list can't cough up for the coaches to travel abroad with them (too expensive).

And it's not always easy for the coaches to get away (up to Glasgow, for instance) and watch early round matches of a 25k, which will be on week days when they may have regular lessons booked and all the other things they do to make a living.

(and we don't have any real team tennis)

So if Lissey and Sam's coach can watch them both play a handful of proper matches, that's a great advantage.

They were playing at the same time at Chiswick last year, and Sam told me that they actually asked for adjacent courts so their coach could watch them both !

Well, Sam needed 6-4 to take the first set off Millie - so that's obviously no walkover match

(Lissey has the first set 6-1 against Grace Piper)

But the next one was easier, as Sam wins 6-4 6-0, against Millie Bissett

And Lissey defeats Grace Piper, 6-1 6-1

Freya has lost the first set 5-7 to Morgan Cross

Edit - the LTA had the score the wrong way round - typical !

Freya wins 7-5 6-1 to set up the semi-final with Sam

All according to ranking, and that coach will have a bit more work to do, and split loyalties:

SFs:

Sam def. Freya, 7-6(3) 6-3

Lissey def. Holly Staff, 6-1 6-2
