Week 50 - ITF (W15) Monastir, Tunisia Hard

Yes, I don't think SQ is talking about the Emma Rad sort of players. And ones like Vic Allen, obviously, are at college.

But it's certainly true that we don't have the group we used to have of lower ranked, active players.

Ola, in fact, is a good example to add to SQ's current list of Alice and Emilie (although a little young). To be honest, Emily Appleton might be another (although that might sound a little mean).

Anna Popescu is another. Amelia Stuart maybe too.

All active players, in the 600 - 1000 sort of range, who are rather scratching away to get odd points here and there.

Like SQ, I love having a big group to follow, no matter how low down the list they are.

However, maybe in the bigger picture there's not much lost if these players don't go out and give it a whirl? Certainly that's what they LTA thinks - it adds nothing.

But, personally, I feel it's all like mushroom spores or dandelion seeds - you need to have zillions, that blow off in all directions, and it's not always obvious where your next crop of mushrooms will come from.

Ironically, after losing to that youngster last week, her 5th defeat in a row, all at W15 level (4 as the seeded player), I had started writing a post questioning how long she would continue to keep going, but I ended up not pressing submit as I thought I was probably being overly harsh, so from that respect, it's good to see her putting that behind her and going on a decent run here, including some rare wins as the underdog, but I must admit, I definitely think more in line with the LTA (as per CD's post) rather than that of SQ or CD.

Actually to have the GB #25 ranked woman, Ola Pitak, at WR 805 on 24 points is historically not bad at all for us.

I can certainly recall Steven's top 25 tsble having players ranked beyond 1000 and with single figure ranking points. Unfortunatdly Steven's history of the rankings of the 25th best ranked men and women, from the stats section, is not now loading for me so I can't go further into that.

But to me we have rarely in recent years had better depth in our top 25 with # 20 to 25 being Freya, Emily App, Beth, Emilie, Alice and Ola.

There is a bit of a drop thrn to GB #26, Emily Arbuthnott WR 936 on 15 points. But again I just ssy that our top 25 stands up against previous times. I don't think there were any swathes of 600 to 1000 ranked players. Maybe a few more but less higher up, so positive overall movement in our top 25. I would think 17 ( will soon become 18 with Emma R ) top 500 players is again historically about as good as it has been in the last few years.

Now that all said, I still think a few development home 15Ks would be welcome in adding potential numbers and late developers rather than this policy which looks like if it isn't clear you are going to reach 25K at the very least, we in the LTA are not going to provide any helpful stepping stones to see where you can initially get to. So up you whether you have the confidence / stubbornance / funds to give it a go or just find something else to do, without ever finding out just how good you could be.
