Week 47 - Davis Cup Finals - Madrid, Spain - (Indoor, Hard).

How can this happen again? Start so well and then effectively cave in. Seven games on the bounce.. He won't be playing tomorrow now I assume. I was hoping for great things from Evo this tournament but this is quite disappointing against two players he's well capable of beating. Mentally fatigued, almost certainly.
Posted rant to wrong thread but here it is correctly placed.

Mentally fatigued at season end? Yes, you may at least to an extent have answered your own question.

Interesting to see the selection vs Germany. Andy didn't exactly wow, and although 5-1 up on H2H vs Kohlschreiber it tends to have been a bit of a battle at the best of times. Hopefully though Andy would be much sharper in a second match.

Good to remember that, unless my app is very wrong, Evo has played 83 matches this year.

I think we also have to give some credit to Bublik. He started to go for his shots and played extremely well towards the end. In such fast conditions, both court and altitude, when someone is hitting it that hard and accurately, there is not a lot of answers. He was hitting 200kmh+ 2nd serves. Plenty of DFs but also plenty of unreturnables.

While obvious unfortunate issues in the group stages, the tennis has largely been good thus far, but it should really start heating up now that there's no more set % to worry about, and straight shootouts going forward, plus with Canada-Australia well underway now, GB-Germany starting at 5.30pm local (with no tie before) and the final on Sunday starting at 4pm local, there shouldn't be any really late finishes - the only one that might is Spain vs Argentina, if Serbia vs Russia goes really really long before it, but fingers crossed that doesn't happen, the Serbia tie is also starting 30 mins earlier, 10.30am local instead of the usual 11am.

I see Belgium just beat Kazakhstan to 3rd RU place by 5 games. Lucky that didn't end up being for 2nd RU place and progression to the QF.

D. Belgium : 1-1 3-3 7-7 70-62
E. Kazakhstan : 1-1 3-3 7-7 70-67

If the current format is retained they will certainly need to reconsider the retirement scenario.

The doubles will decide the first QF as Canada and Australia are locked at 1-1, but in both matches the lower ranked player got the W. Pospisal is in some form this week.

In terms of GB, I expect us to play kyle and andy tomorrow. Andy will no doubt play another marathon. If we win , a big if, then we would most likely play spain. I'd rest Andy again and play kyle at 2, against PCB (RBA has had to leave as his father is very ill), and dan play rafa. We might have a chance of winning that match with that team, saving andy for the final.

Indeed, and Pospisil and Shapovalov won the doubles and comfortably, 4 and 4. So Canada are into the semis. Canada, with this win, equal their best ever Davis Cup showing, in 2013 when they reached the semis. They now have extra rest on Serbia or Russia and that promises to be a great semi, whoever they play.

To back up Ace's comments, here is a list I compiled of all of the players and their wins record this week. Pospisil is top, although he has played one match more than Nadal and Rublev.

RBA's father has subsequently passed away. Tough few years for Roberto, his mum died last year.

Yes Pospisil certainly prospers on these faster courts. I do remember him playing out of his skin against GB in that away DC tie a couple of years or so ago. Unplayable for spells with the home crowd behind him. I think he beat both Kedders and Evo that wkend. Shapovalov hit the umpire in the eye but otherwise played ok for a youngster as well. They will be tough to beat here on this surface.

Serbia v Russia also goes to a deciding doubles as well. Doubles as ever in DC gets more exposure and that is a good thing.

Djoko presumably will play doubles, with Troicki. Presumably Khachanov and Rublev go again for Russia?

The Russians take the first set in doubles. Russia v Canada, if it happens, and Rublev v Pospisil would certainly be a worthy semifinal for two of the players of the week...

Have I understood correctly that the GB Germany tie starts now? I'm in California so it's only 6.30am here and I can't watch or listen so have been relying on the BBC live text which has not come up yet.
