Seemed easy in the end, 6-2 6-0. Chiesa broke back at *3-1 in the first set to get it back on serve, but then 9 games in a row for Emma and the Italian's woes continue.
So the aforementioned 5th seed Salden of Belgium up next who is currently at a career high 286. Looking at her recent results, she has beaten Dodin recently, and taken a set off T Maria, so does seem capable, but she generally seems to be able to beat those 300+, but lose to anybody inside the top 300.
Emma is obviously outside the top 300, but that's mainly due to inactivity IMO, and she has proven a number of times (in her limited tournaments) that she can beat top 300, and even top 200 players. Should be an interesting one.
Yes I agree with you Ace, Emma's next match here should be an interesting on - and I'm going to go with Emma to win it. She has plenty of upside potential still.
Oh, and just to note one more thing since I noticed it whilst updating my this week's rankings tables yesterday - it's Happy 17th Birthday for Emma today! it's noteworthy because I think some of us have felt that she hasn't made as much progress as should could have this year. She hasn't but she's just written exams, and she is still very young!!
R32: RADUCANU, Emma (GBR) [Q] 560 def CHIESA, Deborah (ITA) 395 (CH:143 June 11) 6-2 6-0
R16: RADUCANU, Emma (GBR) [Q] 560 vs SALDEN, Lara (BEL) [6] 286=CH
Every W25 she enters she seems to reach either the QF or SF which is a great sign, it's just the lack of events that stops her moving up the rankings significantly, but she'll have a good team around her, and a good head on her shoulders, and she'll know what she is doing, and is still really young as you say.
She has built up a really solid collection of wins over the past 13 months or so, and it is really encouraging that we do have a legit hope on our hands.
From being live world #4 ranked under 17 she will for now be live #14 under 18. The top 12 may be senior ranked top 400 and some much higher but as said Emma's 'true' ranking is much higher than her current WR 560.
And anyway her ranking, while comparatively still up there, is a bit incidental at this stage as there are different paths and Emma has indeed had limited tournament time ( indeed sometimes hardly even any practice time ) due to school/exams and apparently some niggles.
To me it's much more she could have made more senior progress rather than that she should have. Still looking very good.
Yes, be great for us to see her flying up the rankings but as Ace indicates, in the round she's doing fine for now ( pretty good consistent level considering such a stop start stop schedule ) in a year that has been about much more than just tennis.

Although its irrelevant to the parties involved I'm far more comfortable with the path that Emmas team has chosen that the one Gauff is following in term of personal development

I entirely agree with this. As long as they get the opportunity to develop still, I dont think young players should have the pressure/target of a professional senior sport till 18 as any other young person would while still in education (tennis development classed as training in my eyes!)

That said, I've seen Cori Gauff up close, having lunch, hanging out. And seen her dad and mum, stood next to them while they were talking, (yes, listening in - well, you couldn't not hear......). And they seem very decent and normal (not like some parents of far less noteworthy youngsters). As did Coco.
I think people are suspicious of child 'wonders' but there are often far, far worse situations for kids a lot lower down the ladder, and there's nothing wrong with aiming very high as a youngster if that's actually where you are and you're well grounded, with well grounded people around you.
Yes and the two stats I'm impressed with is that she got 6 aces and did not have a single BP against her. She won 1/4 BPs herself, so it was a tight set but she was in control once she got that break in Salden's 2nd service game.
