FQR:  (q9) Cameron Norrie WR 58 defeated (ALT) Egor Gerasimov (BLR) WR 104 by 2-6 7-5 7-6(3)

He needed two bites of the cherry to take both the second set & the decider.

L48:  Kyle Edmund WR 75 vs (Q) Ricardas Berankis (LTU) WR 70 (CH = 50 in May 2016)

That's not going to be easy!  The winner will play Schwartzman (14) in the last 32.

L48:  (Q) Cameron Norrie WR 58 vs Milos Raonic (CAN) WR 32 (CH = 3 in November 2016)  bleh

The winner will play Thiem (5) in the last 32.

They are all pretty hard at Masters level - maybe you'll get one lesser match in the first round, but then it's going to be tough

Definitely, that's why they are called Masters!

Maybe Kyle can give Willbomb a call for a few pointers.

How did Kyle qualify for the main draw? Was it based on his old ranking?

Yes.  Entry deadlines are several weeks (6, I think) before the tournament. At that time, Kyle was ranked high enough for the automatic entry.

Phew animated emoticon  L32:  Jamie Murray & Neal Skupski CR 51 (20+31) defeated (WC) Elliot Benchetrit & Corentin Moutet (FRA/FRA) UNR (261+0) by 6-4 3-6 [10-7]

90 points in the bag.  JJR/Tecau or Granollers/Zeballos (2) in the last 16.
