Week 43 - ATP 500 - Swiss Indoors - Basel, Switzerland (indoor hard)

I suspect he has lost his way motivationally a little, end of a season and maybe just needs a break. Hopefully

He has changed his coach and is trying to progress his game,  hopefully it will all come together for the start of next season

is it possible to see how he is changing his game? What is he working on specifically? I havent seen any action at all so would be really interested?

Also, I know he is working with Hilts temporarily, to see how the relationship goes after a long break, before they decide. Results dont seem to be in their favour this past couple of weeks but if they are working on things for the longer term, perhaps that doesnt  matter too much?

Dan is 5 off Paris  main draw entry (Tiafoe is next alt in) so presumably will head off to qualies in Paris.

He's 0-6 against players inside the top 180 since (and including) the Federer US Open match. Fortunately he's had Pospisil and a few local 200+ Chinese players to still pick of the odd win. Obviously some of those 6 he'd be 2nd favourite, but it's still a poor return on paper for the past couple of months. A lot of the potential reasons mentioned on here may well be valid, and hopefully he has a good off season and hits the gorund running in 2020, assuiming there's no major up turn in fortune in Paris.

Ah, there's still the Davis Cup as well. Hopefully he can get a spark in Paris then.

If he wins this then Dan will more than likely take out his career high and move into the top 40 given only a few players could catch him with deep runs.

Another jinx Ive put on a player. Im good at that, or bad depending on how you look at it.

Looks like it, no reasons given? I googled it and came across a story of dan withdrawing due to lost luggage en route to Paris qualies...then realised it was a story from 3 years or so ago!

That what it says, yes. This twitter account and the other associated one (entry list updates & there is also a WTA one) is very accurate.

Seemed to be moving freely, I suspect you're right, mentally fatigued from what I could see at the end of the first set.

I'm not surprised, he's had a long season by his standards, and only taken one other break in my memory. He's not built for the travel aspect of the tour. I wish him good R&R and hope that DC will help his motivation going forward. It'll be interesting who plays no1 and 2 in it.

I am pretty certain it's based on rankings , so dan would play number one regardless of who else is in team.

As it happens, that would work well. Andy on current form would beat anyone at number two. We can also beat most other doubles pairs.

No clarity yet as to why Dan has withdrawn. Is James Evans his cousin? Keeps cards close to chest!
