Week 42 - ITF (W100) Suzhou, China Hard

Q1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 16 539 v GUMULYA (INA) 738 CH=564 2016

A very difficult doubles draw though, as despite being 4th seeds their opponents will include world number 21 Duan.

Yes, and that stroll in the park is worth 4 pts too. Wow, and for her next match... there has just been a large surprise. I thought Hiroko Kuwata WR 323 was nailed on to win it, but somehow despite being 4-2 5-4 and 6-5 up in the deciding set, Kuwata kept failing to serve the match out, and then did the same in the MTB losing it 9-11 to the young Chinese player Emily will now play instead.

QR1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) [q16] 535 def GUMULYA (INA) 738 CH=564 2016 6-1 6-0

FQR: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) [q16] 535 vs Qianhui TANG (CHN) 751 (CH:617 June 19) 19yrs (JCH:232 Jan 16)

For the doubles Emily is playing with Sofia, as Paul mentioned, and Harriet is playing with Valeria Savinykh, who she has also partnered before, and they are top seeds.
Yes, it's an interesting match that Sofia and Emily are going to have with Duan. Would guess it will depend a lot on how much they can keep the ball away from her.

Tomorrow it is just Harriet and Valeria who will play their doubles, and Emily her FQR match.

R16: Harriet DART/ Valeria SAVINYKH (GBR/RUS) [1] 251 (131+120) vs Shuo FENG/ Fang Ying XUN (CHN/CHN) 466 (209+257)
R16: Sofia SHAPATAVA/ Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GEO/GBR) [4] 352 (171+181) vs Ying-Ying DUAN/ Ying ZHANG (CHN/CHN) 439 (18+421)

Quals are placed and there should be a pretty good chance that Harriet and EWS meet in R2.

Round 2 I will take if they do. Emily already has 6 points now from those two wins, and a R32 win is worth another 13 pts.
And yes, wow, Emily's draw a totally unranked WC player in the first round of a W100 event! And she's not a junior either...

R32: Harriet DART (GBR) [5] 130 vs Peangtarn PLIPUECH (THA) [Q] 312 (CH:175 July 17)
R32: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (Q] 535 vs Yi YUAN (CHN) [WC] UNR/UNR

Both Emily's matches will be streamed. Harriet sadly on one of the unstreamed courts

Yep, so much better than meeting in R1, which it could have been. A few possible exceptions aside, I'd imagine most on here would want Harriet to win that match (should it happen), and if those 3 required results did occur, then a W100 R2 for EWS, and a QF minimum for Harriet would be good returns, very good from EWSs POV.

The other 3 Chinese WCs apparently won their WCs via a pre quallie competition, not sure if Yuan was involved in that at all, but EWS is 1/33 to win a main draw W100 match, which is incredible really. Harriet probably has the 2nd toughest Q opponent after Tauson (which probably would have been 50/50), and is 'just' 2/9 to win, but we certainly can't have any complaints about the early stages.
