An incredible turn around from Sam after the first set thumping she received. As mentioned she took a toilet break after that set... and was never behind again.
Harmony Tan up next... Keep this up and Sam is in real danger of ending up GB #4 soon!! She is already up to GB #5 for week after next, with her and Katie S neck and neck. However, because this is a +H tournament, Katie will have to win a round more than Sam to go ahead of her... And if Sam wins one more match she will pass Maia, the current #4.
What would be the projected sum of points needed for entry to qualifying for Australian Open?
That's Indy's kind of question since I think he keeps those kind of tables.. but in terms of my estimates here goes. Last year's initial qualifying acceptance cut off was 234, but eventually 251 was the last ranked player in. But let's take 234 as the benchmark now. Next week 234 (Sara Errani!!) will have 250 points. Currently Sam has 214, so just 36 off. She already has 11 from this week; if she would reach the SF here she would gain another 25 points and be just 11 more off.
And in terms of points coming off still this year... Sam has absolutely none! All her counters will last until next year. So really she just needs a minimum of those 36 points still, which means 1-2 more good tournaments, and I'd say her qualification is guaranteed.
