Sexual Abuse in Tennis

Despite the horrific circumstances, it is heartening to see how many people are tweeting, hopefully more to come. I hope that Peng Shuai and her family are safe and well. In my online version of The Guardian, it is one of the top stories, with the WTA seemingly prepared to forego millions in pulling out of China:

I agree FW. The whole situation is massively concerning and the WTA seem to be doing this right - given their whole business is massively dependent on China, this would be massive and possibly harm wta more than China, China would survive wta pulling out. So for wta to say this is about as strong as they can go. Whether it will make any impact on how the Chinese are handling it, Im somehow doubtful , sadly. Just pray that Peng is ok.

Peng Shuai appears to be safe for now but the real test will be early next year to see if she plays in the Australian events leading up to the Australian Open. Failure to appear there would be very concerning. However if she appears and chats freely to other players and commentators, without the presence of minders, that would be very positive.

I don't think people on this board really grasp how common this is. Andreas refusal to tell her parents resonated with me, to this day my parents do not know that one of their friends assaulted both me and, at a later date, my much younger sister and they will never know either, because I know the guilt that they will feel and I don't want them to have that burden. It's a rare woman that hasn't been coerced or abused in some way. It may take years to even recognise it as abuse.

Unfortunately, many of us on this board do grasp how common this is.

I feel for you regarding telling you parents, emmsie. On the other hand, in a similar scenario, my younger half-sister told her mother, only for it to be instantly swept under the carpet, and categorised as "must never be mentioned" (and, many years later, the two don't speak now).

The institutional, systemic aspect of Andrea's story made particularly harrowing reading

A read about the new programme and book which, although fictional, are very much based on true life and designed to shed light on some very murky, and sometimes illegal, behaviour

This is heartbreaking, made even sadder by the fact people seemed to know the man was a sexual predator

Am a bit perplexed, CD, by your addition of an "e" where none was necessary.  wink  That said, I'd be more inclined to describe Hurel's offence as mental harassment or psychological bullying or even just honest-to-goodness domestic abuse.

I note that the pair are in the process of divorcing.  Sensible.

I find it slightly strange, to be honest, SC that you'd focus on a typo when this is a thread about sexual abuse but moving on:

USTA are currently in a battle, both with the judge and the media, as to their role and how they are portrayed in the Kylie McKenzie case
