Boys: Junior Davis Cup finals, Orlando, USA, green clay (Week 39)

The British team of Jack Pinnington Jones, Lui Maxted and Derrick Chen (accompanied by Chris Wilkinson and Dominic O'Hara) have been in Orlando for a few days preparing for the finals.  This article gives some background to the finals, and list of competing nations.  The home nation will be favourites, with two top 10 ranked juniors (Martin Damm and Toby Kodat), though Japan have the Wimbledon champion.  There are I think only three other top 100 juniors potentially eligible (for France, Serbia and Spain), though the French team which won the European title has good depth.  Live streaming should be available from tomorrow from at least one court on the ITF site, and the draw takes place later today.

RE: Boys: Junior Davis Cup finals, Orlando, USA, hard (Week 39)

The boys were unlucky in the draw. Seeded 5 they were paired with top seeds USA, who they will probably have to beat to reach the semis from their 4 team group, rather than the weaker 2-4 seeds.

The 2 other teams in the group are Bolivia and Canada, and they have started well by winning both singles against Bolivia. Live streaming of all courts is available here with the doubles on court now (Derrick and Lui are 2-2 in the first set).   However you need to sign up to watch the streams (free).  USA lead Canada 1-0 in the other match in the group

RR1

GBR 2 Bolivia 0

Derrick Chen d. Santiago Navarro 6-0 6-1

Jack Pinnington Jones d. Agustin Eduardo Cuella 6-3 7-6(2)

RR1

GBR 3 Bolivia 0

Derrick Chen d. Santiago Navarro 6-0 6-1
Jack Pinnington Jones d. Agustin Eduardo Cuella 6-3 7-6(2)
Chen/Maxted d. Navarro/Requena 6-3 6-4

Looking at the stream they played on green clay The campus has a mix of green clay, hard and red clay, but it looks as if if they are just sticking to green clay for the JDC so I will change the thread title

Canada are the opponents today, and its another strong performance to earn a second win. I thought that the group winners went through to the semis, but on further inspection it seems that instead this year there is an intermediate stage with the top two teams qualifying for the quarter-finals, If so it is very good news, as we would qualify along with the USA (who have also won 2) and avoid them in the quarter-finals. Live scoring is available here

RR2

GBR 2 Canada 0

Derrick Chen d. Jaden Weekes 6-2 6-1
Jack Pinnington-Jones d. Marko Stakusic 6-2 6-4
Doubles to come

The third round robin is underway and it has been confirmed that we have qualified for the quarter-finals, so this match decides which of the two nations will be seeded. Lui has come in for Jack today, viewable on the live stream (despite the pessimistic message on the streaming link page) , and the USA are well on their way to victory seemingly

RR3

GBR 0 USA 1

Derrick Chen lost to Toby Kodat 4-6 3-6
Lui Maxted v Martin Damm 3-5 currently

The tall leftie JWR4 comfortably serves out for a 6-4 6-4 win to seal the tie for the US

We drew Japan (seeded 2) in the quarter-finals and Derrick has got the team off to a great start with a 6-3 6-4 win. I caught the last 3 games, which showed Derrick able to generate more power than the last time I saw him, and he was largely dictating the baseline rallies, though lost a couple of key points, including a break, through dodgy overheads . The Japanese number 1 is the Wimbledon champion though.

A strange match with 3 one-sided sets, which the JWR2 edged, so doubles will decide who makes the semis (scroll the live streaming options to court 3 if you want to watch). The Japanese doubles pair have been supreme in their round robin matches, twice having been required to play a decisive rubber through losses for their number 2 player (as today)

QF

GBR 1 JPN 1

Derrick Chen beat Kokoro Isomura 6-3 6-4
Jack Pinnington Jones lost to Shintaro Mochizuki 1-6 6-1 0-6

Derrick and Jack battled well in the second set, but the Japanese pair (Mochizuki/Sueoka) were slightly stronger, winning the match 6-2 7-6(4). We therefore will have to play in the 5th-8th play-offs tomorrow

From Chris Wilkinson:

Victory for Derrick and a comprehensive doubles win for Derrick/Lui after defeat in singles for Lui yesterday. Today has followed a similar pattern so far with victory for Derrick and defeat for Lui - doubles about to start. The Davis Cup will go to one of the two nations to beat us this week, as USA currently lead Japan 1-0 (with Mochizuki about to serve for the match against Damm to level up)

Very close but Spain just won the doubles 11-9 in the match tiebreak so finish 5th and we finish 6th. Seedings have proved pretty accurate here, with the top 4 seeds reaching the semis, but it is the second seeds Japan who are on the verge of the title, thanks to their phenomenal doubles pair, who currently lead the Americans 6-4 5-3
