Week 39 - ATP 250 - Chengdu Open - Chengdu, China (hard)

Interesting that Bai was a top ten junior but only got up to ATP 200 (and is 30 years old, or so).

He played so well today, wonder what's been going on in the last 12 years or so.....

Hmm. The big coaching loss for Kyle certainly seems to have been Fredrik Rosengren at the start of the year.

On the coaching set up, I wonder if Hilts will team up again with Evo. They got on so well in a previous reincarnation, and despite the Kyle/Hilts combination not working out, I still rate Hilts as a high quality coach.

Edit

I see Jimmy09 beat me to my own prediction.

Well, I think we're all wondering this. I recall Hilts saying before he had expected to work with Dan for some years... Dan is clearly trying to do different things, and be more than just a baseline slicer. I guess it also partly depends on whether Hilts has evolved too, ie I think Dan will be wanting to go forwards in a relationship not backwards, so would like some new input. As Hilts knows Dan's game so well, I'm sure he is capable of that.

i'm thinking Hilts will team up for the remainder of the year either until Evo appoints a full time coach, or reviewing at season end to see if they take things forward

I'm not getting the scheduling at this tournament. Dan played his 1st round Monday and now doesn't play until Thursday when he will have both a singles and doubles match, the doubles match doesn't involve anyone other than him in the singles so why not give the guy a bit of a break and schedule that today.

I agree with you that it is strange scheduling. Two matches on Monday then nothing on Tuesday or Wednesday before another two matches om Thursday is not logical. Perhaps the ATP should give some better guidance to tournament organisers.  Kinder scheduling for players involved in both singles and doubles might encourage more mid level players to plat doubles. But is this what the ATP wants?

I also wondered re this. For a 32 player event, I dont actually see why there isnt a standard structure of event from Monday to end of week...QF, Semis and Finals are always Friday to Sunday, for a sunday finish, but last 16 and 32 differ. Last 16 split across Wed and Thursday 4 matches each and last 32 split across Monday and Tuesday, 8 matches each would be so simple. And doubles ditto could be worked across the days quite easily.

Clearly this can vary for 28 players etc.

And for 64 or 56 or 48 draws, would need a different structure, but surely it isnt difficult?
