Week 39 - ATP 250 - Chengdu Open - Chengdu, China (hard)

is it correct that Dan will become #1 after Beijing/Tokyo week as it stands unless Kyle adds?

Based on your points assessment above, Cam will also take over #2 spot over that period, all things being equal and Kyle will drop into the 70's or lower ranking level.

Dan facing a tougher than expected struggle currently,

On points in the bank Dan would be ahead of Kyle after his Beijing and Shanghai points come off ( Kyle would still be ahead, as things stand now, after just his Beijing points have come off ).

The ATP race effectively shows players' points totals at 11th November if they add nothing by then.

Live race :

1. Dan  1039  ( after R1 win )

2. Cam  825  ( after R1 win )

3. Kyle  700 ( equivalent to WR 78 in the current rankings )

PS: Steven's GB players' points totals for last year, with a chronological list of points due off, in the ranking/stats section, are a great resource ( one of many ) which I will miss next year.

Goodness, this is SO close...

Into a third-set tie-break.......

Final set tie break. Dan would have taken that at 4-5*, even if the Chinese player then had to serve to stay in it.

Feel SO sorry for poor Bai - he played so well. Could have gone either way.

But what a great match. And well done to Dan

(and Colin Beecher who was heading for the real wooden spoon of coaching days must be mightily relieved)

That was tougher than predicted, not sure if Dans opponent is better than his ranking or Dans change in coach and style still isnt bedded in yet

Is Beechy working with Evo at the moment ?

Dan vs Dimi.
Now this will be interesting given the excellent run out of nowhere Dimi had at the USO, in a very bleak year for him and dropping to the 70's I think in the rankings,l losing to low ranked players - I think one such loss was to someone ranked in the 400's. In fact, his form has been patchy since winning the WTF 02 title in 2017 - injuries and lack of confidence.

The commentator said that Colin was there doing 'double duty' or some such phrase.

I understood from that (and a few other comments) that Beechy was definitely there as temporary coach, and he was certainly courtside all match (as was Dan's girlfriend, who always seems like a really nice person and I imagine - no idea, but imagine - that it must do Dan good having her around, especially in a country that is very foreign for him).

But the commentator also said that Dan was searching for a permanent coach....

To answer my own question, Beechy is apparently now back working with Kyle, albeit on a temporary basis at the moment. Kyle and Mark Hilton have parted ways.

Beechy and Kedders. Life goes full circle.  Happy days.

But definitely working also with Evo for this event, as above.

Yep.  From Stuart Fuller:

Edmund will work in the short term with Colin Beecher, who coached him when he was in his late teens. Beecher had already agreed to travel to China with Dan Evans

well that was harder than first thought but credit has to go to Bai he played a great match. Evo in typical Evo fashion clawed it back, hung in there and toughed out a super win. At a glace it wouldn't seem like much of a win but having watched the whole match he really battled out there.

Didnt realise Kyle had split from Mark Hilton! Chance of a reunion for Evo & Hilts?

On the coaching set up, I wonder if Hilts will team up again with Evo. They got on so well in a previous reincarnation, and despite the Kyle/Hilts combination not working out, I still rate Hilts as a high quality coach.

Edit

I see Jimmy09 beat me to my own prediction.
