Just 9 players in qualifying, and one match to be played. I suppose it isn't that surprising given the location.

Like Emilie  Ali seems to be now scoring points at will - despite having struggled to for ages to get the three counters she's now doing very well  smile

Hmm, very relative. Good to see that she is at least getting a foothold after a disappointing couple of years or so. But I am sure she is looking for much more in the reasonably near future and very much more in time, and that would be good to see.

Like Emilie it will be a big step up to 25K - different paths - be interesting to see who makes it ?

Way to go for Ali to be stepping up to 25Ks.

It's a while since I've seen her live. I did like some of her instinctiveness and feisty attitude. But certainly was very inconsistent, seemed surprisingly ungrooved in basic rally shots from where she was at an early age and seemingly for a time a bit ahead of her contemporary, Fran.

Not sure what her coaching set up is now? She didn't last long in a US set-up ( I forget what that was exactly ) and was then working with Nikki Slater which seemed maybe questionable for say repetitive singles basics improvements.

You mean 'there's a way to go before Ali steps up to 25ks'?

Not

'way to go !!!' as in 'well done', to Ali for stepping up ? (coz this is a 15k.....)

But yes, based on her at 14/15 years old, I had decent hopes for Ali. She was on a good path. And then dropping out of the US, taking on Nik Slater, don't know what, but the tennis she played at age 17 was nothing like what it was, it had become all chippy, daft tennis.

However, she seems to be based in Spain at the moment????? Plays there all the time and lists Kiernan as her coach now, so Soto???

And seems to be getting some good results - she's missed out by a whisker on quite a few decent wins in the past year. Maybe it's time for it to come good....

She was defending a WTA point here, I believe, so has covered that. And, cross fingers, expect her to win today - her opponent doesn't seem to have posted any wins of note (apart from the first round here and that could have been down to the other player).
