Emma plays another unseeded player next in Heisen who thrashed Georges 1 and 1. I was thinking it was going to be a battle of two 16/17 years olds, but got Heisen mixed up with another German, Hodzig, who was over here in W25s earlier in the year. Heisen in 26 later this year.
Garland has just beaten Gervais, so she is into the QF as well. May well be her first QF at W25 level?
Gabi, yes, has had illness and injury but in the year as a whole has still played a pretty decent amount of tennis tournaments but not often very decent tennis - and that stretches back into last year too.
And I certainly still don't get this drama business with her. It's in Jodie's makeup, she has seemed naturally a bit volatile from when we first saw her ( not to say she too shouldn't consider it ). But Gabi seemed to change during last year, both to the drama and to poorer tennis.
So at least we'll get guaranteed British finalists in the doubles.....
And if Emma could just keep going a little longer, it could turn into a most rewarding tournament
Overall it's been a little bit disappointing on the single's side IMO - 11 participants in round 1, inc 2 all GBs ties, but only 3 through (2 of those guanranteed), so 1-6 in the GB vs overseas matches - obviously most of those 6 were underdogs, but we could maybe have expected to get at least one more through (particularly Gabi). Jodie would likely have been a reasonable favourite to beat Sanchez pre Surbiton, but finding form / fitness after a lengthy lay off will always be difficult, and at least she did get a half decent win, and hopefully she can stay fit and get a bit of momentum going again towards the end of the season, ready for a big push in 2020.
Emma still being involved is a massive bonus and does kind of save it a bit, even if she loses tomorrow, because it's great to see her back playing, and there's obviously a lot of hopes for her. From my POV, her winning back to back matches, including a win over another decent junior, does make it more exciting and worth it (so to speak) than in other recent GB events. But yes, if she can get another win tomorrow and reach a 3rd W25 SF within the last 10 months, then I might even say it was a success.
Nice as well to see Jo Garland doing well, but she'll have it tough tomorrow.
Having lost the first set 5-7, and being 1-2* in the second, Emma has an MTO for what seemed to be a problem with her abdominal muscles/ribs. But she didn't actually get any treatment in terms of strapping, pain killers, whatever, the physio mainly talked to her and got her to do a bit of bending etc.
She doesn't seem hindered in her shots but is currently *1-3 down
Another QF for her is decent, especially as she did have the 2nd seed in her path to get that far (even if she didn't play her), but one of the worst possible outcomes today, going from 5-2 and looking like reaching the SF, especially as she was the pre match favourite, to losing 9 of the next 10 games, retiring, and will now possibly be a doubt for next week.
