Jay is in a luckier position than some, though, in having a strong family support team.
But it can be very lonely.
And players need a strong club to fall back on too, with tennis friends and tennis 'normal' life (as well as non-tennis friends and normal life).
He certainly looked rather 'lost' though, yesterday.
I can see why something like World Team Tennis in the States becomes very appealing. Get to be with a group of guys for a few weeks, one country (familiar culture as well) , get paid an income, decent crowds, perhaps Jay should give that a go next season if he gets through this...
Yes, he was originally going to be in the same team as Harriet, read into that what you will. To be fair I suspect that there was a bit more to the Gauff thing than just the opportunity to play mixed doubles with her, she has some major 'players' behind her and there were probably promises made about coaches, opportunities etc that made it appealing but you have to be in the right mindset to take advantage of those opportunities and he clearly isn't. I have to say as a parent the one thing I have always instilled in my son (sometimes with massive rows) is that if you make a commitment you stick to it whatever better offer comes around but then I grew up in a time where you couldn't just text your mate any change of plans. Maybe if he had had to let Harriet down to her face he would've made a different decision

As is clear Jay hasn't been playing well for a few months. And he withdrew from the doubles here for "personal" reasons and has withdrawn from next week's Glasgow Challenger.
For now I simply wish him all the best and hope things take an upturn before too long.

His previous long term injuries have been stress fractures of the back and shoulder injuries. I hope this is just soreness and nothing more. If anyone deserves an "injury free" run it is Evan.
