Poor result for Harriet and let's hope Jo doesn't implode

Did the umpire just dock a point from Jo because she challenged his decision to replay the point after he called a call out incorrectly and late and Kasatkina missed it? Had there been history earlier on? Just to add, Jo would have had advantage if she'd won the point to break back.

Harriet

Didn't play well and that was a good draw but Bogdan deserved the victory today. Excellent achievement to qualify

Well can Jo turn things around or will British interest be over in the women's draw by 6.30?

I feared for Harriet when I saw the draw - Bogdan is a good sound player, much better than her ranking would suggest; the Romanians have some really good players at the moment, no doubt all trying to be the next Halep. People will look at Bogdan's ranking and say Harriet has done really badly, but rankings so often don't tell the whole story. On the plus side, Harriet qualified and that is a sign that she deserves to be in the top 100 and can get there.

Pity, Bogdan too good.

I don't think that Harriet "deserves to be in the top 100". She's done well to again qualify for a Slam MD but she still has to prove more and earn that top 100 place.

I have a reasonable amount of confidence that she can get there but for now I don't see her as underranked.

You'd have hoped for a slightly closer score but I don't think it's a poor result - Bogdan was favourite, and rightly so, given her far higher CH ranking.

Now if Jo were to lose to Kasatkina, THAT would be a poor result (much as I like watching Kasatkina play and am a fan)

But Andy, Bogdan is 27 in a couple of months (so should really be in her prime) and is currently ranked 152, did feature in qualifying, and a few places adjusted here and there, Harriet could have faced her in quals. Likewise Babos, currently ranked 125, another mid 20s who was a mainstay of the top 100, but is where she is and beat Harriet comfortably a couple of weeks ago, which you watched. The amount of Anisimova's, Andreescu's, Yastremska's, Swiateks etc. just to name a few who are really arriving and have arrived means there are so many players who can be top 100, and it will be harder to get in. Flipkens, Niculescu, Cirstea, Bouchard, Barthel, Buzarnescu (injury issues) were all factors of the top 100 but are all currently outside that landmark.

Bogdan was the favourite here (as would about 90% of the draw have been), so no shame in losing, although the scoreline is a bit discouraging, but Harriet hasn't beaten one top 100 player in 2019, and had 2 opponents in qualfying who needed a QWC to get in, so still a long way to go on that front to say she deserves to be top 100 IMO.

I've just mentioned similar. But then, Wang Xiyu and Baptiste were also betting favourites by similar margins, like 4/9 vs 13/8, so she did well to win those, particularly Xiyu, so there are definitely positives for the past 7 days and I'm sure she would have taken the outcome this time last week, but still a lot of ? over how far she can eventually go, and being well beaten by Bogdan asks further questions IMO. FWIW, Harriet was 2/1 to beat Babos, and around 4/7 vs 5/4 against Duval, Loeb and Harrison, so it kind of shows the level where the bookies think Harriet currently is.

Still life in this one, Kastkina gets the break back, 2-1*.

Poor Mariam, was serving for the match at *5-3, has lost 6 games in a row and is now a break down in the second.

It's not great when multiple top players exit and the likes of Diyas just go out to a 30-40 player in the next round, resulting in less big matches in the later rounds, but personally, I'd be quite pleased if Barty crashed out here - long way to go though.

Better, 4-1*, hopefully there's no more twists and turns here and she can hold twice to see it out.

Jo is running away with the final set.
I have signed up for Amazon Prime(free trial) and not very impressed. Picture blurry(assume not HD) slight delay due to WiFi and they have pictures from one company and commentary elsewhere.
When they go round the courts, there are no pictures or graphics....

Well done Jo. Whatever went on, she obviously got over it. Bit of a relief having someone in the second round.
