Firstly, it's pretty chilly in NYC this morning - and that concerns me a tad for Jo. Second, I'm very excited to see Serena Sharapova live tonight despite the fact that it's really not a rivalry. Can't beat a duo that transcends a sport play each other. Here are my other picks today -
-Venus/Zheng will be good: Venus definitely on an upturn - practicing more, winning a three set 7-6er in Cincy, serve seems to be back vs a player that's just won her biggest tournament in San Jose.
- Kerber/Kiki is a toss up: neither playing well. Kiki with Osaka's old coach, Kerber without one. Both have obviously been top 10 in recent years.
- Colleen/Kenin will be scrappy: verbal screams, racket throwing all possible. Colleen on her way back and Kenin having a great year. Don't expect it to be close but it should be fun.
- Genie/Savastova is interesting: good contrasts of styles. Genie's been playing better, without the results to show.
- Sakkari/Giorgi playing well: rather unfortunate to meet in the first round - huge hitting awaits anyone planning to watch it.
Harriet 3-6, that last point at *15-40 did look well out, but no hawk-eye, and I don't think it would have made too much difference. 21-31 points. Going to need a lot of improvements if she is going to turn it around.
Ah, there is hawk-eye on the court as there's just been a challenge. I wonder why she didn;t challenge the last point, unless she was just complaining that it hit the back edge or something and cursing her luck.
Some of these matches are going so fast, Jo's included, but I've got my eye on Rybakina-Muchova who are second on and it's following a men's match which is already 6-3 3-1, so I'm concerned that it might actually be finished before Jo's match here, despite BO5 over BO3.
Harriet being outclassed by someone with greater firepower I'm afraid. 3-6 0-4*
She did very well to qualify, especially that FQR, so it's decent points and of course prize money, but it's a shame the way this match has gone with those 8 games in a row. Bogdan has been far higher ranked and was quite a mainstay in the top 100, but at the moment they are ranked similar, but seem such a long way apart.
She's saved a MP or 2, so hopefully she can avoid the bagel. She's held. 1-5*
I feared for Harriet when I saw the draw - Bogdan is a good sound player, much better than her ranking would suggest; the Romanians have some really good players at the moment, no doubt all trying to be the next Halep. People will look at Bogdan's ranking and say Harriet has done really badly, but rankings so often don't tell the whole story. On the plus side, Harriet qualified and that is a sign that she deserves to be in the top 100 and can get there.
