Well done Johanna, very impressive.
Ka Pliskova always seems to play well against her though, and I suspect with that match, it will be very tough to make any further progress.

Only now realise how lazy & incorrect I was about this: CoCo to me is Vandeweghe; Gauff is still Cori, not her pet name.
But Osaka plays Gauff, which is indeed a dream match.

I maintain any match involving Vandeweghe is the dream match of no (sane) person.

Apologies for the error and false impression given by my too hasty comment.

Jo is 2nd on Louis Armstrong after an 11am start. So Jo should be on around 17.30 UK time.

No idea. But really pleased.

Gauff's so young and doing so well, it doesn't matter in the slightest.

But when I heard people had booed Naomi (because of the Serena match...uh?.....what?....how?....), I was SO rooting for her.

If Jo loses to Ka. Pliskova it will be the 3rd time in a row that she has lost to a Czech player in a Grand Slam.

Contrary to the men, the top women are far more geographically widespread.

USA/Canada account for 5 of the last 16. Asia has 2. Australasia 1. And 8 from Europe.

In terms of countries with multiple players, the USA has 4 and Croatia 2.

The age range has Serena as a complete outlier (at age 37), and Georges at 30, and - at the other end - Andreescu at age 19 - but everyone else is in their 20s, with nine girls under 25. Average age = 25.37 which is the lowest for a while.

A very tight range in height too. Only one player six foot or over. And only one 5 ft 6 or under. Everyone else solidly close to about 5 ft 10.

(18) Q Wang takes out Barty, quite easily too.

Is this the same Wang that had most of her points from weaker tournaments? Wang's had *some* wins since then.

Not necessarily weaker tournaments, but the vast majoirty of her points came in the 2 month post US Open period when the tour is basically in China, so many thought it was a purple patch at home where some of the better players may have been in shut down mode. She did get a lot of top 10 wins in that period. This is by far her best result of this year, she made Miami QF, but her run there was bye, pre clay Konta when she was about 50 in the world, Serena walkover, then Wang Yafan.

So many errors from Barty, particularly on the BPs she did manage to carve out.

She's been ahead all set, but a poor service game here and she's on the brink of being pegged back. Broken to love when serving for it. 5-5*

So many BP's squandered by Jo and/or saved by Pliskova.

Can't believe that set slipped away with all those other chances for the insurance break, but Pliskova raised her level at the end and kind of stole it. Long way back now.

How many of the 9 missed break points did she actually have a play on? 2?
