Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open Tennis Championhips, Flushing Meadows, NYC - Hard

A little bit of discussion about this on the qualifying thread, but about time it had its own thread. Not the easiest match, and you generally think of Kasatkina as a very good young player who has down well previously at slams, but she's currently live ranked 78 in the Race to Shenzhen without any obvious period of inactivity, so that just shows what a poor year she's had by her standards, so perhaps it's better than it first appears.

Hopefully Harriet can join Jo in the main draw.

Stand out first round match is obviously S Williams vs Sharapova. Random draw they say. Certainly not complaining anyway.

I think Williams vs Sharapova is going to be a total dud. Not a chance it lives up to the hype.

Keeping an eye on these though: Muguruza vs Riske and Sabalenka vs Azarenka

I know what you mean about Serena-Maria, their H2H and the RG 2018 walkover takes it's a little bit off it, but it's still 2 of the biggest 5 or 6 names in the whole sport (which is pretty rare for female athletes) and I'll still really want to see it. Obviously a night match on Ashe, I just hope it's first on at midnight and I'll definitely stay up until 2 or 3 to watch to a conclusion. If it follows a men's match at 3am UK then it'll be difficult, but you'd think it should be midnight and 7pm New York.

Yeah, those 2 matches stood out for me as well, 2 well matched ties between decent players which are really hard to call - you'd like to think Muguruza would be the favourite, but I'm not sure she will be

I guess Gauff-Potapova is reasonably interesting as well, Potapova seems a veteran at 18 and a half.

Kenin-Vendeweghe sounds great on paper, but the latter is struggling to win games, let alone matches since her come back, but she might just bring it on the big stage.

There's been a few interesting matches I thought, more than usual, even Venus vs Zheng has something about it, two top 50 players (or just outside in Venus') case who are coming into it in decent form and neither will probably be too happy. And without just wanting to list matches for the sake of it, Sakkari-Giorgi could be good as well, as Camila absolutely destroyed Cornet in the Bronx today, and is starting to show signs of her late 2018 form after an injury hit season.

I can't wait for this to start now.

You have the wrong score in the Dubai match. It was 4-6 7-6(6) 6-2 to Kasatkina.  It might be a painful reminder but Jo had 2 match points in the tie break.

But Kasatkina has had better form in North America than Jo. i.e. she has at  least won some matches.

I've corrected the score in the OP Rosamund.

A lot of players have won a match in the 4 week USO swing, e.g. Lin Zhu won at a match at the Bronx earlier in the week, Di Lorenzo won a main draw match in Canada, so on that basis you'd likely find a reason to be pessimistic about pretty much anyone that Jo faced here.

Apologies for being lazy, what does this mean for jo in terms of that schedule of play?

It means Jo will play Monday, along with Serena v Maria, which I think will be anything other than a dud. Two of our greatest players head to head, and with the added spice of the animosity between them both. Can't wait for Jo's match and Serena v Maria, and let's hope Harriet makes it too - there are some big name players to play qualifiers/lucky losers, including Halep and Pliskova.

I'll go 'dud' for Williams vs Sharapova. But be fun if it's very much otherwise.

This is the reason for pessimism about Jo's prospects. It was commented on by one of the journalists on twitter  it was not Jo losing sets and  matches but the scores lines. After losing the 1st set against Strycova 6-7 she lost sets 1-6, 3-6, 2-6 and 3-6. Or alternatively after leading Strycova 4-1 she won 11 games whilst her opponents won 30 games.
