Kyle needs to take the rest of the year off and get healthy and figure out a Plan B when slapping forehands doesn't work. He is in a pretty steep decline at this point and there is not a lot of reason for optimism.

On talent alone, he is a top 100 player, and nothing to worry about.  But he needs a new coach or something.

Thiem has been ill and not able to train much.
Zverev has had a lot of off court issues and/or the WTF trophy is cursed (look what's happened to Dimitrov since he won it) - not entirely serious here, obviously.

Yay, Kyle breaks to love to take the 4th set.

6-3 6-7(1) 5-7 7-5

Now let's hope his conditioning has hugely improved since Wimbledon time and will not hinder him now.

Go Kyle !

I assume that it was an issue as Andujar rolls off the last 6 games to take the match. In some ways at least that would be some explanation if he still has a fair bit of work to do on his fitness following his knee issue ( is that resolved? )

Everybody knows about Slamrev, he has far too many 4/5 setters in early rounds against mugs, and then cannot get past R16.

On tour, the best of 3, he is a demon.

Fab beats Thiem (4) in four:  6-4 3-6 6-3 6-2!

That section of the draw is a joke, Clownfils is the highest seed left in now.

I don't think it was that, from watching the match. But always possible.....

Trying to damn with faint praise, Vandy? Except most folk have seen Kyle in action at or near his best against very good players so have seen the potential to reach upper echelons ( I won't put a number on it ). So ignore challenger, top 100 stuff.

I do think the loss of Fredrik Rosengren has been big, technically and apparently firing him up more on court.

So he maybe has both injury/fitness issues and coaching issues and also no doubt increasingly some confidence issues.

It does indeed look like time to be thinking ahead now to 2020 and taking all steps he can to help move forward again.

What I mean, even if Kyle continues to play as he is, at 50% he is still good enough to maintain a top 100 ranking.

Last 16 in 2016, last 32 in 2017 and now 2 straight first round losses against very beatable opposition. Very sad to see how far backwards he has gone at this event.

He has only won two matches in the last five slams.

Khachanov falls to Pospisil in 5 sets so of the next 8 in the rankings after the big 3, 5 have fallen at the first hurdle.

For now the WRs 5, 6 and 7 - namely Medvedev, Zverev ( barely ) and Nishokori survive with the next after them being Coric WR 12.

It's pretty dire for these looking for some sort of real challenge

Yet and people wonder why Andy thinks he can make a come back even with a metal hip

I'm pretty confident even Andy at 80% of what he was could still be a match for most of the currently next gen.

Yes, you could hardly blame Andy for wondering "what if" he had been fit during the last couple of years and thinking ahead "what if" he can yet get back at somewhere approaching his old levels.

That may be too much, and the ultimate prizes probably beyond him. But what if ...
