Why was at least a 33rd seed not moved into Anderson's place with the LL loser taking the new seed's place?
Indeed, I actually thought that the 17th seed would have been moved there and a 33rd seed into the 17th position.
It's hardly an absolutely last minute withdrawal.
It's silly, but it's part of the Grand Slam rule book whereby if someone withdraws after the day 1 order of play has been released then they have to be replaced by LLs rather than the draw rejigging. Vondorusova withdrew towards the back end of qualifying which is why Zhang was seeded. The ridiculously early releasing of the O.O.P on Friday evening meant they had to do it this way.
Having commented and listed the ( not for the first time ) rather generous US Open draw for the leading women's seeds, I had a look at the top men's seeds' draws.
And it's much less skewed, indeed has leading seeds playing such as WR 41, 43 and 60.
1. Djokovic vs Carballes Baena WR 76 2. Nadal vs Millman WR 60 3. Federer vs (Q) Nagal WR 190 4. Thiem vs Fabbiano WR 87 5. Medvedev vs Gunneswaran WR 88 6. A Zverev vs Albot WR 41 7. Nishikori vs (Q) Trungelliti WR 205 8. Tsitsipas vs Rublev WR 43
Is that Dan Evans shouting "F OFF" at the changeover?
