Week 34 - US Open, Women's Qualifying Singles, New York, USA - Hard

Harriet should be OK for round 1 but roud 2 she may get one of the young Americans who did beat Katie Swan a few months ago but in general its a draw that atleast gives them an opportunity to qualify.

Odds are up:

Naiktha 9/2, opponent 1/7 - when you're losing to Freya and someone ranked outside the top 800, you're going to be an outsider against most of this field (although to be fair, Katie S was 6/1 to beat Tiechman at RG quals)
Harriet 4/7, opponent 5/4 - pretty much the same odds as her recent matches with Harrison and Duval. I think Cabrera was even closer
Katie S 1/7, opponent 9/2 - looking at the youngsters recent results you'd like to think Katie should win, but she did go 3 sets with Babos in WTA San Jose the other week and had 5-5 on both the sets she lost, so could be a bit of a banana skin
Heather 2/5, opponent 7/4

So looking at that, you'd like to think the 2 clear favourites would go through (hopefully Hev is recovered sufficiently in time), Naiktha will be up against it, and Harriet's should be pretty close and wouldn't be a surprise if it went either way - she went 3 sets with Harrison and Cabrera and lost to Duval in those 3 similar odds matches I referenced. She was 2/1 to beat Babos FWIW.

3 wins would be great, and while 2 might be slightly under par (judging by those odds and the respective ranking difference between our 3 favourites and their opponents), I probably would just about take it, if offered.

Bains gets break back, then recovers from 0-40 to advantage. Serves a huge double, misses an easy forehand and serves another massive double

3-5*

She looks a bit out her depth sadly, shots are very lightweight. Reminds me of Hannah Collin for those of that fan generation

Over and out 63 61.

If she had levelled at 4-4* from 0-40 down it might have got interesting but those doubles from game point were wild.

Well, she managed to turn the hour at least.

Yes I remember Hannah Collin . She won the British  National championships at Telford aged 17. I think she had Jo Durie and Alan Jones coaching her at some stage or other.

Yes, didn't see this match but that's what I've thought the couple of times in the last 3-4 years that I've seen her live - very lightweight in her shot, not solid/consistent enough to make up for it, and rather a lack of grit to really buckle down and make a match difficult for the opponent.

I guess I'm going to know the answer to this but is there any way in the UK of watching the US open buying into Amazon? Really struggle to get past my principle of not supporting them in any shape or form.

Yes, it's difficult. I'm thinking I won't be watching much/ any of the US Open if they are the only provider.  The answer would appear to be yes, only Amazon prime will show in the UK. ESPN is in the US. I don't know if a tunnel app browser might be helpful though... to be somewhere else. I frequently use on my travels to view UK content eg BBC iplayer which won't play out of the UK.

Technically you can get a free prime trial for a month and cancel it - not giving them money that way, otherwise it's a lot harder.

Not ideal being a tennis fan these days without subscribing to Amazon, especially from January when they also add the WTA rights to their portfolio in addition to the US Open and ATP. The likes of Bet365 are showing all the USO matches that Amazon are showing, no commentating on the Rybakina Q match, unlike Amazon which has 2 of them, but then there might be principles involved there too? There's always the likes of Joker Live Stream as well, but you're risking virus' there.

I see our Aussie friends are doing well thus far, 4 wins from 4 (some of them outsiders) and another 5 to come before tomorrow. That's in addition to 5 in the main draw. We take (from their POV) an also-ran off their hands and she instantly becomes one of our better players. No wonder Naiktha wanted to switch alliagences when you see they have 14 players involved here compared to our 5 (2 which actually switched from there). They've also had their injury issues, 170 Birrell has had elbow surgery so isn't here, and Myers has had her fair share of injuries.

Both traditional sporting countries, both host grand slams as well as 3 WTA events, and our popn is nearly 3 x bigger - the respective current landscapes shouldn't be that different IMO.

France has so many blinkin' principles about Bet365 that you can't even log in !

I'm happy not to bet on the site, if that's against their Gallic ideals, but I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed just to log in and watch livestream. :(
