Week 34 - US Open, Women's Qualifying Singles, New York, USA - Hard

Wang is strange player.

She's clearly a big ball striker and 90% of the points when she's hitting through the ball and belting it she wins the point.

Then she'll play 2-3 points where she's timid and doesn't do anything and then Harriet takes charge.

Strange.

Good hold from Harriet for 5-5*

Townsend meanwhile recover from 1-5* down in the second set tiebreaker to go to a third (though she was 5-2* up)

Re the Lucky Loser slots, if it is 3 from a Pot of the 5 best ranked final qualifying Lucky Losers, so far Badosa, Hon, Flipkens and the loser of Babos v Lepchenko are ahead of Harriet - for her to grab a slot, she now needs Townsend, Kalinskaya and Gibbs to all win. Townsend has just gone to a third set.

Anyhow hopefully Harriet won't need a Lucky Loser slot. Not optimistic about Gibbs beating Peng.

Wang takes the set 7-5.

Frustrating but this has been tight throughout. It's always felt like it was Wang who had a better level to go to if she could dig it out, and she did towards the end of the set.

Very tough for Harriet now.

Lost 2nd set 7-5 cry

I'd hate to see her lose now but it has to be said that that service game at a set and 3*-2 was utterly woeful and let Wang right back in.

Vondrousova is out. That means there will be a rejig in Jo's section, and it means 6 girls will go into the lucky loser hat

That sounds right Andy. Townsend was 1-5 down in the second set TB before turning it around, so that potential passage was on the brink of ending, but a repreive for now. Kalinksaya-Muhammed in early stages as well.

Poor Vondrousova, she's not had the best time since RG. But an additional chance for Harriet - I assume that will be 4 LLs from 6, so a 67% chance of getting in if she is one of the 6.

5 of the last 6 games for Wang here, so it is looking more likely.

Yes two very weak doubles from nowhere in that game. Harriet battles to hold at the start of the third

1-1*
