It might not be the worst in the world. With the addition of Federer and Novak, Medvedev isn't a top 8 seed this time, so no bye (hence playing Kyle on R1). If he beats his compatriot Karen later and makes back to back 500/1000 finals, and doesn't have that extra round off, it might just affect his mindset with the US Open just around the corner.
Under normal circumstances, in form, and one of the highest ranked in the first round, then it is a brutal draw.

I suppose one can clutch at straws and hope he might not be at his best if he makes the final this week. But as the highest ranked player in the first round, who has by all accounts been playing exceptionally well, and beat Them comfortably last night, you have to feel there might have been easier draws available?
The draw is the draw is the draw. No matter who you face, you still have to beat them to progress and Kyle hasn't been able to consistently do that this year (for whatever reason(s) that have been discussed)

Absolutely. He may also lose tonight, have an extra day off and be raring to go next week. Much better draws available, and it is clutching at straws a bit, but it could be similar to last week in that hypothetically, had Kyle played Nick at the back end of Washington, it probably would have been a lot tougher than the first round of Montreal.
I was also thinking Med could potentially withdraw, or if not, do what he can to ensure he doesn't have 3 successive weeks of deep runs leading up to a major, I.e. possibly tank. But yes, at face value, it's one of the tougher draws he could have, possibly the toughest.

Not too sure about Medvedev, something not quite right about him, he has been in controversial news before, he was disqualified from US tournament for saying black umpire is 'friends' with his black opponent.
He reminds of Davydenko a bit (a man also that was controversial in so many different ways). Medvedev also looks like he may be going bald, and we all know what baldness is associated with..........
