 Agreed, Nadal needn't go to us now...unless he wanted to try for a slam win. Realistically, nadal should focus on clay in europe, why risk the states.

So it does kind of depend how the US and French Open Slams play out, and how you look at things.

Yes, good point. As it is everyone can keep their March to December 2019 points whether they play or not ( yes, rankingswise it gives no incentive for a 2019 tournament champion to go for it again, they can put their feet up, though there is still $$$$ and in particular a Slam title remains a Slam title, which surely matters more than ranking points, and if they don't defend or do but are not as motivated then hey more chance in 2020 for other players ). 

And the count the better score method for repeat tournaments certainly seems fairer than being able to double count or add all new points plus dripfeed off the current frozen points at 1/52 of these points a week ( as had been brought up as a possibility and would still say leave Nadal with possibly 2020 French Open title points plus still retaining most of his 2019 French Open title points for some time to come ). 

No doubt there will still seem some anomalies as it works itself out but at the moment it does look to me a quite well thought out method to take us to the end of 2020.
