That's a great effort by Ali to take it to a decider. Gramm has held first in the decider and is still favourite to advance, but it's just much nicer to see battling performances, even if they go out. Beth took a seed to 3, Ali has done the same (minimum). I'm twisting this to suit my argument, but Anglica got an experienced player, who had already beaten Arruabarrena, Badosa and others this year, to 5-5 in the first set and than had a lead in 2nd, and broke her 3 times, so seemingly competed well. Contrast it to last week:
Gabi and Sam lost in straight sets as a seed, as did Naiktha (although a Brit benefited). Holly only won 2 games, Lissey lost 2 and 4, Emily Arb 0 and 4, Emily App and Alice lost in 2, although on a relative scale, you could maybe compare Alice's result to Angelica's today, a close defeat. Ali couldn't take her match against a seed into a decider last week (although still fairly credible), etc.
So, points and prize money wise, you get nothing more for losing 6-7 in the third, than losing 0 and 2, but just from a fans perspective it does give you a lot more hope that they can take that into their next tournament and gives you a more optimistic outlook.
Ali did have a BP to get it back on serve, but the Greek held, so has a 0-3* lead, and it is a long way back, but I still do go by the above. Ali won 5 games in a row, dropping only 4 points, and that does make you take note for the future.
Damn, Ali 0-4*, Emily has been broken in set 2 (0-2*). I'm sensing a sneaky edit on the previous post before anyone quotes it

Good performance but sad she couldn't get past the veteran Arn, not least because the win would have given her 10 pts and a WTA ranking. As it is she has 6 pts and 2 counters from the last two weeks, so now needs one more counter still to gain a ranking. Since this is it in the UK now, heaven knows when she will play again, since she has no national ranking to speak of.
There are a couple of 25Ks scheduled at Roehampton in September.
Not over yet, but can see from live scores that Andre is 3/8 on bps while Emily is 2/2 so not having many chances to break. I didn't put anything on it as trying not to get into betting!
Best case scenario would be for me cashing out for around £8 (keeps changing significantly after every point), and then Emily comes storms back to take it and it's win win. I'll just let it go though regardless.
Yes, certainly don't want to lead anyone astray, and it can be a dangerous game if not in moderation, but there can be value to be had, if you spot something potentially a long way off what you thought.
Edit - I can cash out for almost the full amount now , and looks like another 3 setter that's gone the wrong way. Most of the eggs will be in the Naiktha basket tomorrow as to improving on our 3 wins, but for Emily it really is another severe blow.
