Another Futures blockbuster, either way.

Whisper it softly, but Emile Hudd's just taken the first set off Sijsling by 7-6(2).

Sadly, it proved to be a false dawn:

L32:  (2) Igor Sijsling (NED) WR 387 defeated (Q) Emile Hudd UNR by 6-7(2) 6-3 6-1

And, last but not least in the first round:

L32:  (Q) Quentin Gueydan (FRA) UNR defeated (Q) Elliott Farmer UNR by 1 & 3

*****

L16:  (WC) Charles Broom WR 1577 vs (2) Igor Sijsling (NED) WR 387

Charles takes the first set by 7-6(4).  Let's hope he can succeed where poor Emile failed yesterday.

With 6 of the 8 singles matches today involving Brits, we are guaranteed one winner, and have two (Jack and Paul) who most certainly should win, given seedings.

The other three play the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seeds, and so - in theory - should lose easily.

But I'm going for one upset in that three......

Charles has just got the first set - all my upset hopes now pinned on him....

But Sizzly lost the first set yesterday and came back to win.....

Mark, unsurprisingly, is the first to bite the dust:

L16:  (1) Jurij Rodionov (AUT) WR 317 defeated (IR) Mark Whitehouse WR 550 by 4 & 3

But young Jack brings home the bacon:

L16:  (5) Jack Draper WR 430 defeated Erik Crepaldi (ITA) WR 611 by 3 & 2  smile

As does Paul:

L16:  (4) Paul Jubb WR 623 defeated (IR) Lucas Poullain (FRA) WR 818 by 4 & 4

Then Aidan follows Mark through the exit:

L16:  (3) Julian Ocleppo (ITA) WR 442 defeated Aidan McHugh WR 462 by 3 & 2

*****

QF:  (4) Paul Jubb WR 623 vs (5) Jack Draper WR 430

L16:  (WC) Anton Matusevich WR 1223 defeated (6) Ryan Peniston WR 427 by 5 & 1  biggrin  bleh

Probably worn out after his marathon match against George L yesterday!

*****

QF:  (WC) Anton Matusevich WR 1223 vs (3) Julian Ocleppo (ITA) WR 442

Charles Broom 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 vs Sijsling.

Final set TB.

One early break apiece in the final set, the last 5 games of which have seen 9 aces in all.

Sadly, he couldn't quite pull it off:

L16:  (2) Igor Sijsling (NED) WR 387 defeated (WC) Charles Broom WR 1577 by 6-7(4) 6-3 7-6(6)  hmm

Still a good effort.

Such a pity. Charles got a mini break at 5-5* in the TB to serve for it at *6-5 but lost both his points on serve and the final MP.

I am sure it has been discussed in other threads but is there more background to Charlie? He seems quite a player based on last couple of weeks results.

SO we've got three through to the QFs. And they're all teenagers. Two are still juniors. (And a third junior only lost in R1 in a third-set TB. And a fourth junior only lost in R1 4-6 in the third set)

Some high quality tennis at Chiswick this week - looking forward to seeing footage from londontennistube.

Given todays weather forecast, they may well move the matches indoors, where the courts are quite a bit faster. Several players have commented that they thought the outside courts were a bit slow.
