As Indy says, there's been signs that personal things have got a more little sorted out for Freya and the play, and scorelines, have improved in line. Even though not actually big results, as such.
But this is great for her

Yes, this is a great win for Freya... and badly needed too, because sad to say with the rankings merger next week she is going to sink about another 100 places next week to the unedifying ranking of about 676. Even these 5 points will only get her back under 650 but not much more. She has a CH 286, and I agree CD that I believe she still has the intrinsic ability to get back towards it again. However for now, to get back into the top 500 will be her first target and is going to take a little time even if she can carry forward this surprising trend of winning a few matches... But yes, I would really hope the better personal news will have a really positive effect on her tennis as well as her life now.
That result from Glasgow earlier in the year still sticks out. 6-4 *5-1 and then had 4 MPs later, 3 in succession and still ended up losing. Would have been awful had she lost this match as well from 4 MPs, so I am pleased.
Freya and Naiktha are pretty much exactly the same age and I've made it clear I'd generally much prefer more from the circa 200 range pushing on to that higher level than those from 400-600 pushing on to inside the top 300 (I'd obviously like both), but I'm also not too convinced about Naiktha's ceiling and how much further she can go - she had about 40 WCs apparently when representing Australia and some of her success has been geography based, e.g. that Mildura W25 field where she won the title was particularly weak, and the Aussies on TF didn't seem that bothered at the time when she switched. Don't get me wrong, I'm chuffed she did switch and it's another player to follow, currently in and around the slam qualifying positions, which is an added bonus, but I've also said a couple of times, I don't think we are looking at a 21 year old at the top of her game destined for much bigger and better things, more that she's probably almost at her limit unless she gets a fortunate draw somewhere. Very happy to be proven wrong though, although I suspect she'd have still been an Aussie if that was looking destined.
Mind you, Sam seems to be getting eaten up early on...... :(
Hmmm, so far married life seems to have had a negative effect on Sam's tennis. Maybe she's a little distracted right now, tennis not quite up there in terms of priorities...
So Freya vs Beth in round 2 then - I'm rooting for Freya there. 4 wins in a row would be superb for her confidence, and after reading Michael's post about the further ranking fall, much needed as well. Go Freya.

Yes, I'd been thinking that too...... I think we need to have a word with hubby !

I seem to remember that the Aussies ceased funding Jo Konta because she didn't look destined. With hindsight they would definitely had held on to her. However Naiktha doesn't look like emulating Jo.
Grim. Wasn't aware of that, just put the score on and saw it was 6-6 in the TB and then she lost the next 2 points, but just saw that Alice served for the set twice, and looks like she DFd on set point, and now finds herself serving to stay in it.
