Sad news

I couldn't find a general thread for 'sad news' and didn't really want to hijack someone else's specific one, so I thought I'd start one.

This was just to note the passing of Peter McNamara two days ago.

For those who love doubles, and are of a certain age, he was a fixture at Wimbledon, usually playing with Paul McNamee - the two names together somehow gave them a lovable combo profile.

RIP

Thanks CD. Such sad news. The Macs were a great partnership.

Truly sad news. I read this today which is a really well written obituary and includes many comments from his lifelong friend and doubles partner, Paul McNamee

Thanks CD and BiS. I remember them as the Happy Macs, I didn't realise the he'd gotten so high in singles. Goes to show, that we never know what's really going on behind the scenes.

Peter McNamara

Saddened to read of the death of one half of a great Australian doubles team (with Paul McNamee) in today's Times.  They won the Wimbledon title together in 1980 & 1982.  According to his obituary, he died of prostate cancer on 20th July at the age of 64.  cry

If you're interested SC, this was reported on the 23rd July in the 'Sad News' thread and has quite a few follow up posts, and tributes, and links.

As you say, he was a great player to watch.

Sorry.  I had no idea.  I rarely venture into this forum &, although I glanced at the subjects of the first couple of threads, if I'd scrolled down any further & seen the one entitled "Sad news", my curiosity would not have been sufficiently piqued to read it.

Sad to hear that Alexander Volkov has passed away at the age of just 52. He was a lovely player to watch and had some great Davis Cup success, went on to coach Marat Safin as well.

I hope Russia are able to do themselves proud as a team in this years Davis Cup, as mentioned elsewhere, I rate them to win it and it would be appropriate in Volkov's memory.

So awful to hear that Annabel Croft's husband has suddenly died, only 8 weeks after feeling ill, and having been previously (supposedly) in perfect health.

All my very best wishes to her and his family.

I missed this yesterday - very sad for Annabel and family, a huge shock for them all.
