Perez played well, naturally aggressive tennis, especially the forehand. Not easy for Katie to find a way, but she fashioned a set point on her own serve in the first set, only for nerves to kick in. The third set was always going to be a tough ask. What is it about the modern game where the second set is almost conceded at times? Not saying that Katie didn't fully deserve to win the second set, in this match. Is it that a player takes a breather, while the trailing player cannot afford to? Katie played well, and it's all a learning process, while she develops and gets stronger, and better able to find the opponent's weaknesses. It just shows what a difficult sport it is for youngsters to progress to Tour level.
Katie's game has mainly been about big serve and forehand. From what I could see these weren't having a big effect. Perez time and again would wipe the ball to Katie's backhand, get a short reply and then hit a forehand down the line for a winner.
Katie did look in very good physical condition and maybe just needs a few tournaments back to back getting to the QF/SF and beyond to get her shots going again.
