Week 30 - ITF (W25) - Porto, Portugal - Hard

Sadly this is a terrible draw, Eden plays Maia first up, when both would have been looking to get through to at least the second round nodisbelief

Beth also has the 6th seed

R32: Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) [2] 263 vs Eden SILVA (GBR) 449

R32: Sarah Beth GREY (GBR) 511 vs Mari OSAKA (JPN) [6] 312 (CH:280 May 18)

Beth and Eden are top seeds in the doubles again, and have a bye through to the QF.

Shame. Would have preferred Eden and SBG swapping positions with Eden beating the lesser Osaka last week. The all GB match could be quite a close going off recent form, probably go for Maia in 3.

if they were both only looking to get to the second round, even at least, it's not a huge heap of difference if they lose in round one.

Maia, rather, is supposed to get to the final. Now that's more of a problem.

Well you know what I mean CD wink Yes, of course Maia will be hoping to get well beyond the 2nd round, but Eden will have fancied her chances of getting further too, especially after reaching the QF and defeating Mari Osaka then 4th seed in the first round last week. So she would definitely have hoped not Maia as 2nd seed in the first round this week! Maia will know it will be a tough match too.

And I'm also simply looking at it in terms of our net aggregate points potential. It was 18 between them last week, so to achieve the same this week, whoever wins this match needs to reach at least the SF hmm

I've posted before about the Brit girls "flocking" to events and then ending up knocking each other out. Even if they win (usually in 3 sets) they are too exhausted to win the next round. disbelief Is there no organization.

In the grand scheme of things I honestly don't see a few all Brit meetings on foreign soil as much of an issue *. Not sure having 3 is 'flocking' anyway and certainly such a draw was very much against the odds.

All things being equal, yes probably preferable to be kept seperate but sometimes such is their status in the draw an all Brit meeting can look to me, and I know others, a good draw ( even if often accompanied by a sad face ), if not on this occasion.

And while it is an international game with international friendships no doubt at times it is good to have fellow Brits around.

* At times arguments have been made for maybe 'escaping' from domestic tournaments

Of our 25 ranked players, fewer than half will play this week and only 6 in ITF 25k or better. I can understand why Eden and SBG are in Porto as they're a doubles pair but don't understand why Maia has gone there. I had a point to make but I've forgotten what it was disbelief

Eden has reported on Instagram that the women are playing at FOUR different sites this week, one of which is 60 miles away, whilst the men play at the main site.

Eden and Maia are 3rd on Court 1 which is in the early stages of the first match.

Quite surprised with the odds, Maia has obviously not been too convincing these past few weeks with some one sided losses to lower ranked players, but as the younger player, ranked around 150-200 places higher, I thought she would have been a heavier fave than 8/11 (Eden is evens).

Today the women are playing all their first round matches at Open Village Sports hotel at Guimarães, which is indeed 60 km (not miles) outside Porto. If the Porto couldn't accommodate both men and women in the early rounds seems strange that they simply didn't split the tournaments. The women played the first round doubles matches at a yet different venue yesterday.

Think that just shows the odds makers are unsurprisingly savvy enough not to just go on rankings and age but look at such as performances of late, which you point to yourself with regards to Maia. and you said earlier that you thought it could be quite a close match. Kind of their job to look into it rather more and protect the coffers from these who follow things closely.

The odds seem pretty reasonable to me, which is not to say we won't now have a one sided match.

I guess the question is do these Maia odds look very tempting? Maybe you were hoping for tempting Eden odds

I did kind of half fancy Eden (easy to say now after her positive start biggrin), but just not at those odds. I was maybe expecting something like 7/4. Eden did come out very slightly at Bet365 after I posted that, from evens to 11/10, with Maia coming in at 4/6, but still not enough to tempt me.
