Yeah, it looks like had she beaten #438 Gervais and then the 3rd seed ranked #282, and then possibly the 5th seeded youngster who dispatched Eden today, ranked #339, she would have probably sneaked in to the US Open quals. All 3 lower ranked, and individually a decent chance in all, although collectively, odds against as Indi says (today's odds were basically 50/50 for a start), and she certainly wouldn't have turned down the opportunity as playing in those events, even if just qualifying is surely what every young players dreams of when picking up a racket, but that said, it did seem ahead of schedule.
Home WCs are pretty fortunate and not every player gets them, but normally you still have to do the hard work and put in a great performance to get a big notable win or go on a good run, but Maia really did hit the jackpot in Nottingham, facing #481 Tara for the equivalent amount of points of another W25 F, so 4 wins, usually all against higher ranked players than Tara, and she even had it indoors, which was in her favour - so that pushed her on probably more than she was ready for and it's easy to forget she herself was outside the top 300 just before the grass season, which is probably why it's not a massive surprise when she does lose routinely today, or drops a set against someone outside the top 700 like yesterday, or loses routinely to Lily last week. She has had some stand out wins in England over the past 12-18 months, but her rise into the mid 200s did seem a bit different to Jodie's who had been dominating solid top 200 players like Grammatikapolou, Shinikova, Kalinskaya etc. whereas I feel Maia still needs to develop and prove herself a bit more at this W25 stage.
So yes, hopefully between now and the end of the 2019 she can continue to win matches at this level, particularly overseas (although the GB double header may be up her street), and then if she happens to be circa 230 by the Aussie Open, good luck to her and give it her best shot.
Yes Jodie seemed much more the player who was ready to step up, but that re-ankle injury at the beginning of the grass court season has really set her back just at the time when her hard work earlier in the season might have been expected to pay off. And at the moment there still doesn't seem any kind of timetable for her return either. She'll miss the next pair of UK events too, which is really unfortunate.

Yeah, it was absolutely gutting. Easy to say after, but if only she converted one of those 4 MPs against Lapko, or even failed to defend Lapko's 2 MPs in the 2nd set and swiftly moved on to the next event, then who knows where she would have been ranked now. She was coming into that period with real momentum and was definitely the player I was particularly looking forward to seeing most over the summer - I was thinking she could well do what Katie B or Harriet did in 2018, so to fall at the first hurdle, pick up a recurring injury with no timescale as you say, and probably no guarantee of getting back to the level she was at, is very hard to take. Really wish her a speedy recovery.
With Eden here, and Evan going great guns in the doubles in the Challenger at Gatineau, it certainly seems like the Wimbly mixed dub experience was really positive.
I can't imagine there'd be too much demand to watch Maia's match today, but for anyone interested, there are a few match replays on that site including Maia-Gervais, SBGs surprise R1 win, and SBG/Eden's doubles from 2 days ago.
On Maia and Jodie together, I doubt many would have predicted* that they'ed be respectively 4th and 5th Brits in this season's race come mid July.
I certainly agree that Jodie has had the more impressive true breakthrough year and such a pity it has been interrupted as it has. But both have done well.
It would be remiss though not to mention, good as they have been, that they are still outside the top 200 in the overall race and so their GB race positions owe a lot to some players not being in that race top 200 that many would have expected or at least hoped to have seen there.
* Just to be in the GB top 10 come November, 32/45 have Maia, just 10/45 Jodie, and for some reason 0/45 Naiktha ( Maia will drop her 51 Shrewsbury race points before our competition end date, 18/11, so #4 overprojects her competition standing a bit, and of course Jodie can't add just now ).
