I wonder why everyone seemed to expect Andy and Williams to win? Williams is,at best,an indifferent doubles player. She relies on brute strength and intimidation alone with zero volleying ability. These attributes do not work against proper doubles players A very poor choice of partner by Andy who would have won the title with a specialist ladies doubles player!
Absolute nonsense. Firstly shes won countless doubles titles. Secondly if all singles players played doubles then Rafa, Roger, Novak etc would win these slams as the best tennis players win tournaments regardless of singles/doubles. And thirdly because the results in doubles boil down to a few odd key points here and there due the randomness and lottery of the doubles game.
The results in most singles tennis matches "boil down to a few odd key points here and there" due to the nature of the scoring system. Winning the few odd key points is what makes a good player/ team great, not "randomness and lottery".
Notice how the singles players who were unfairly parachuted into the doubles events on their singles rankings all failed to progress. Doubles is a different game requiring different skills. Neither Williams nor Nadal possess those skills!
Serena's WD titles have almost entirely been won partnering Venus. Big serving, power hitting, decent volleys and loads of aggression - all a great help in doubles, but not the same skills as the proper doubles specialists. I'm not in the least surprised that Andy and Serena didn't get any further - and I'd much rather watch some of the other pairs play.
Really strange and a shame that this particular mixed doubles pairing has been used on this thread for player bashing , moreso against one player in particular. But hey ho, each to their own..... I can hear said player quoting Maya Angelou. If memory serves correctly , both players wanted to use the mixed doubles event to get more match fit with both coming back from injury. I personally enjoyed watching Andy, great relief to see him back on court after such a long time off and I'm sure this pairing (including the ones in Queens and Eastbourne) have been a great help in his journey back to full health and singles. So for that , thank you Serena. The pairing was superb and I enjoyed every minute of it. Our GB girls can also learn a thing or two from her about how to return serves, even if her volleying skills have been slated here as being non-existent.
'The pairing was superb'-hardly! To say that is to fall for the hype surrounding both. Fact of the matter is that both are excellent singles players with limited doubles expertise. They lost yesterday to the top seeded pair-who themselves lost today to an unseeded pair in straight sets!
