Girls - 2019 European Summer Cups (U18/U16/U14/U12)

Our under 14 girls are attempting to qualify for the World Junior Championships via European regional qualifying, in the first of the Summer Cups.  They are not seeded in their qualifying group, but their outside chance has improved by being drawn in the bottom half of their group, away from the strong Ukraine team, which includes the current number 1 ranked player in Europe (Alisa Baranovska).  Today they upset third seeds Latvia 2-1 (wins for Eva Shaw, who also combined with Ranah Akua Stoiber to win the doubles via a match tiebreak. To reach the European finals they will have to overcome second seeds Greece, who appear almost as strong as Ukraine.

As feared Greece were too strong winning the two singles against Eva and Ranah before Hannah Read partnered Ranah to a consolation doubles win. They therefore play off for third place in the qualifying group tomorrow.

Eva gave a walkover as the under 14s finished 4th in their group following a 2-1 loss to Finland (Hannah won her singles)

Hope Eva is OK.

If Eva wasn't fit to play singles, why didn't Ranah play singles instead? It seems silly to have to give a walkover in a team event.

It depends on when Eva's problem came to light.  The referee has discretion whether to allow substitutions, but wouldn't if it happened in the warm-up.  It is also possible that Ranah had a slight niggle, so it may have been decided only to risk her in doubles with qualification no longer at stake

The under 12s began their qualifying event today with an impressive 2-1 win over Ukraine in the round robin (Russia, Ukraine and Czech Republic are the three nations who dominate this event). Mingge Xu double bagelled her opponent, but Hephzibah Oluwadare lost in straights to the top Ukrainian, before the pair combined to win the doubles 6-4 6-3. A round robin takes place for three days, followed by a play-off match to determine whether or not they qualify for the finals

Being in a 3 team group meant there was only one more round robin match for the under 12s, and today they beat Latvia 3-0 (Mingge was pushed all the way, taking a final set tiebreak, but Hephzibah won comfortably, and then won the doubles with Lois Newberry. Tomorrow they play Belgium, second in Group A, for a place in the finals

Stormed into the finals (Mingge winning 0 & 1, Hephzibah 1 & 0). Ukraine won the other play-off match in the group

Qualifying for the under 16s and under 18s takes place Wednesday to Friday. The under 16 competition is the more significant with places in the Junior Fed Cup at stake. Our team is Matilda Mutavdzic, Holly Fischer and Amelia Bissett. They play Pland first, which they should win, but will probably have to beat a similar strength Italian team to qualify for the finals.

Our under 18 team of Sonay Kartal, Esther Adeshina and Erin Richardson play Portugal tomorrow, and will also play Italy if successful for final qualification

In the Girls U16, we won 3-0 against Poland. Holly won very easily but Matilda needed 6-4 in the third to take her match. Millie and Holly won the doubles

In the U18s, the girls won 3-0 with a very easy win for Sonay, a win in three sets for Erin Richardson, and Esther and Erin winning their doubles.

Major disappointment in the U16 girls as both Holly and Matilda lose their matches, 5-7 in the third. And so Italy win 2-0.

Which means we don't qualify for the final rounds.

Better news in the U18 girls (although this is a far weaker, less serious competition)

Erin lost easily. But Sonay won easily. And the deciding doubles went the way of our girls, 10-3 in the MTB. So it's a 2-1 victory over Italy and GB qualify.

For what reason is this considered to be a far weaker, less serious competition?

Perhaps less serious for the LTA as none of their chosen ones are in the team but it is one of the GB teams that has reached the finals.

Because a lot of countries don't put in teams, or not their best teams, because a lot of countries don't really want their best U18s playing junior tennis

I would agree that their top junior ranked players don't necessarily play but that's because by this point the players have ceased on the junior circuit.

Looking at the nominations list for the U18 Girls you have players with a WTA ranking of 313, 462, 513, 604, 661, 665, 716, 744, 756, 778, 784, 821 and 850.

Would I be correct in assuming that to be considered a strong and serious competitor ones WTA ranking would need to be better than 313?
