The European Summer Cup season has begun this weekend with the under 14s who are trying to qualify for the World Juniors in August. The first step is to try and qualify for the European Summer Cup finals. They started today with a 2-1 win over Greece (singles wins for Henry Searle and Luca Pow) and need to beat Turkey tomorrow to reach the finals.
Comfortable victories for Henry and Luca saw the U14 boys through to a 2-1 win over Turkey, and hence qualification for the European finals this weekend. They play Spain tomorrow for seeding rights.
The under 14s beat the host nation 2-1 to claim seeding rights at the weekend. Viktor Frydrych was drafted in for the second singles, losing in 2 tight sets, before Luca took over, winning singles and doubles with Henry. The finals starting Friday are also in Spain (Murcia)
The European under 14 finals start tomorrow, and we are drawn against Bulgaria in the quarter-finals. Victory would mean qualification for the World Juniors as well as the semis of the European Summer Cup
Despite a comfortable singles win for Luca (2 & 2) the boys lost 2-1 to Bulgaria (Luca & Henry lost 3 &4 in the deciding doubles), so must beat Germany tomorrow to qualify as one of the 6 European nations in the World Juniors

Murcia is a great club and will be a wonderful places to hold the finals.
The experience of Murcia probably won't feel so great for the British team, as they lost 2-1 to Germany today. Again Luca was outstanding in singles with a 0 & 2 win, but the support wasn't strong enough and Germany won the other two matches comfortably. Hence we don't qualify for the World Juniors
We avoided the wooden spoon in Murcia, with the Spanish number one retiring against Luca, and the Spanish unable to field a team for the doubles. The Czech Republic beat France for the title.
So, tell me about these events DavidC! I recall back in the day a series of summer junior team events called things like the Valeria Cup, Galea Cup, Annie Soisbault Cup, Sunshine Cup etc - are these the events that formed into the European Summer Cups? they use to play in places like Le touquet in france, are these the same events ?

Yes they each have exotic names, and the finals of the U16 boys are still in Le Touquet - go to http://www.tenniseurope.org/page/16418/European-Summer-Cups and scroll down to the bottom to find links to the history of each of the 6 established events (the under 12s are a recent addition). GB involvement in finals are rare, but we won the under 14 girls in 2012 (Maia/Gabi/Jazzi Plews) and the under 16 boys in 2011 (Kyle/Luke/Evan)
Good results for the under 12s. The Lampo Trophy though is a team event before the European team championship involving a small number of nations (Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Mexico (!), Romania, Slovenia, Hungary and GB) The equivalent under 12 event to the European Summer Cups open to all European nations is called the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge. Qualifying is in 2 weeks time with the finals in France.
The under 12s started qualifying with a 2-1 defeat by France. The long-running rivalry between Ben Gusic Wan and Yoshka Sborowsky went the way of the French lad 2 & 3 following defeat for Samy Khediri. Unlike with the other age groups it isn't a knockout blow. They still have the opportunity to win their other two round robin matches to reach the decisive play-offs, but will probably then need to beat the winners of the other group
The under 12s beat Denmark 3-0 (Oliver Bonding and Ben winning in straights before combining for the doubles). With France beating Bulgaria tomorrow's match against Bulgaria will decide which of the two nations advances to the 2 vs 1 play-off
