Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon, Great Britain - Grass

A brilliant third set performance from Jo.

Some stunning tennis , its a shame she has to meet Petra in the next round .

Thats such a tough draw , it depends which Kvitova turns up , she can be brilliant but can throw in errors depending on her mood.

great result from Jo, Kvitova will be tough but is beatable, she can be quite in an out (a bit like Jo) so depends on who turns up. Centre Court match surely?

As with the men, seeds fallen all over, only 6 of the top 16 left in at the last 16 stage

7 of the 8 top 16 seeds in the top half had got through to today ( only Kerber had gone ).

Some more chaotic normality brought to proceedings with the exits of Bertens, Stephens (), Bencic and Wang.

I had a court1 ticket today so able to watch Jo. A case of all worthwhile. Funny how the momentum can change in a match.. Jo was struggling to hold her  serve for a set and a half. Sloane was holding hers with no problems until the 4-3score   in the 2nd setr at which point she  started to struggle.Jo only lost her serve once in the match it just felt more.

Can Jo vs Petra have them both win please and thank you smile

Petra was dubious for even playing Wimbledon in the first place so No has a good(ish) chance here. Petra at least did better than last year when she was hotly tipped to win and often plays better under the radar.

For myself, I support both players so I will be happy whichever of them win.

Me too. At least it guarantees one of them will reach the QF, but would have been much happier for them to meet a round later to guarantee one is in the SF!

Some really interesting 4th Round matches I think. What are everyone's predictions?

My last 8 would be Jo, Ash Barty, Serena, Mertens, Yastremska, Pliskova, Halep and Martic .

With the home crowd cheering her on and Jo in great form, I think she will have the edge on Petra - I don't think there will be many breaks of serve though, as both strong in that department and my guess is a longish match.

I can't see Ash Barty having any problem, but all the others look pretty competitive. Serena and Mertens should come through I'd have thought - Navarro and Strycova are experienced and gritty players who will be tough opponents and it isn't the foregone conclusion that the bookies seem to think. Probably Yastremska will beat Zhang too, though I think it is another tough one to call.

Pliskova always looks a bit vulnerable on grass and although Muchova is the rank outsider of the 16 now, I think she has a much better chance than the 5-1 that the bookies are suggesting and another match that will be interesting I think, but ultimatelyI'd take Pliskova to win, though I don't think she will get much further than the quarters.

Halep is a big step up for Gauff, but along with everyone else, I can't wait to see how that pans out.

Petra Martic is such a wily and experienced old player, who regularly does really well here and I wonder if she will surprise Svitolina.

Anyway can't wait for the super Monday - along with the first Monday and Tuesday, which I always go up for (camp up there from Sunday morning), as there are so many opportunities to see all your favourite players live, the second Monday is for me the most exciting day - the surprise players, the new names, the favourites and big name match ups - you can't beat it. Hoping to see the Martic match on TV followed by Pliskova, Jo and then Halep v Gauff - hopefully they won't all be playing at the same time.

Pliskova 1/6 v Muchova 24/5

A British lady reaching the 4th round of Wimbledon is a rare event.  Perhaps we should make the most of it. It is only the 4th time since 1985 this has happened. Previously Jo did it in 2017,  Laura in 2013 and Sam Smith in 1998. The significance of Sam Smith in 1998  is that  it  was the  very last time a player born in Britain reached the 4th round of a Grand Slam singles.

And in 1984 jo durie and Anne Hobbs both made the last 16, last time that we had 2 players reach the second week in terms of last 16. We see jo on tv a lot of course, I wonder what Anne went on to do post tennis?

Thanks for the update on Anne when her playing career ended.. She was one of our leading players during the late 70's and 80's. Somehow or other she was never employed by the LTA when she retired,. Never know what the criterion is for employment or otherwise.
