Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon, Great Britain - Grass

I didn't think Davis was good enough to win by that score against the defending champ. Sure, she's made the most of her chance.

A useless fact about Lauren Davis was that she was the last player who Marion Bartoli  beat before her retirement in 2013.

Read from the Guardian website that it is only the 2nd time since Anne Hobbs and Jo Durie in 1986 that  we have 2 ladies through to the 3rd round of Wimbledon. Jo and Heather managed it in 2017.

The number of singles  matches our players have won in the Grand Slams already this year is a decided improvement on 2018 and equals our best in the 21st century. We already have 12 whereas in 2018 we only had 5.  We also had 12 in 2017 and 2016 but that year included Naomi Broady beating Laura Robson.

Christina McHale seems to meet our  players in the 1st round of Wimbledon more than most. She was the 1st round opponent for both Johanna Konta(2012) and Katie Boulter(2017) in their 1st Wimbledons. She has also provided Harriet with her 1st Wimbledon win and  thus her 1st win in any Grand Slam.

Thanks for that, Ros

I'm dire at stats but I had the feeling that we were having a really good year in singles.

(And, let's be honest, a singles win should count for three of a doubles win ....... runs and ducks for cover biggrin)

We're obviously going to surpass 17 (obviously!) so that's great.

Not really serious, but can't help wondering if the USTA are just a tiny bit miffed that the AELTC gave Cori the wildcard here, and it's here that she's 'exploded' onto the media scene. Wouldn't they have prefered it at the US Open?

It won't really be the same now, at the US, unless she wins it, of course

The USTA will almost certainly have to give her a MDWC for the US open - unless of course she wins a couple more rounds here and gets in directly. I'm sure the media over there will make the most of the WC status

Yes, certainly. But they've lost the surprise card - the AELTC have rather stolen their thunder smile

(Not that they'll care really but.....)

LOL - it's a few weeks off, I'm sure the US media will try pretend they were there first !

Well, she will probably win a slam in the future, but today's match was a total joke. such a bad quality match, both players playing badly, making loads of UEs, and the slices. OMG. I was bored silly, I even put R5L on as listening to it was more exiting than watching it. She was jolly lucky that Hercog bottled it, and I felt that she didn't deserve to win - neither of them did really, it was so bad. I just hope that the Halep match is of better quality.

I agree. The second set particularly was the most painful dreadful set of tennis I've seen for years. Hercogs' was the mother of all chokes. Tippy tappy gone mad.

The story about Jean-Claude Faurel is also rather nice in this Coco-mania moment.....

He'd been coach of Mannarino, having previously worked for the FFT at the main training centre. He did a great job but then they split up (he got fired?) and was at a bit of a loose end.

Four months ago, Patrick Mourtaglou recommended him to Coco's parents as a trainer and he's been working with her every day since then ..... and now he's up in the player's box, watching young Cori set the tennis world alight (even with some pretty dodgy tennis at times..... )

Not sure why the Gauff match is being slated.

It was up and down but I loved all the slice , and it makes a change from all the power tennis. Gauff was lucky but its not her fault Hercog choked , there are countless matches where that happens .

For drama you couldnt beat that match .

The Halep match will be totally different and it would be a huge shock if Gauff won that .
